there was no manual v8... hence the need for the swap kit www.quantum-auto.com

you need the sc300 manual DS or a MK3 front sc3 auto rear...

Hi,

i'm new to this forum, but not to cars or car forums.

i wanna start off by saying, RedPhoenix's site is one of the greatest things on the internet!! that and quantum-auto.com store. you guys are doing the Lord's work, as far as i'm concerned.

years ago, i thought someone should do a manual conversion to the lexus V8's. i was pleasantly surprised that AU/NZ guys have been doing it for years, but I wasn't about to go invest in a knowledge base in which I had to do metric conversions and parts I had to purchase from overseas international sources, and let's not even get into that shipping.

But I was happy to find I was not alone in my thinking!

I spent the last few months trying to decide what my next street/track project would be and I've become a big fan of the 1UZ.

I'm in the middle of rennovating my new house and making a nice spot to park my project car, so next year, I plan to get an SC400....

and I plan to rock the stock motor with a w58 conversion.

I'm not going to hate on 1JZ's...because I think they are good motors, but I
plan to track the car and I really, really want to stay away from a turbocharged motor at the local tracks here in SoCal.

All I want is an intake and a catback on the 1UZ. I plan to beat the hell out of it at track days/drift days, so I need to do as little as possible to get the power/weight I'm looking for. and if I blow one, i'll just go get another one for peanuts.
i would eventually love to rebuild one. a 1uz would look hot on an engine stand in my new garage.

I want it to pass smog and still have good power.

I say go V8.
It's way unique and under-appreciated. light and cheap
It's easy(stock) and reliable(n/a). the early ones are non-interference.
it's an oversquare, overbuilt, and beautiful sounding motor.

It's pimp.

Maybe it's just an assumption for me, but when I hear about anyone swapping these cars, I automatically assume that it's an automatic. Even if it's a 300, simply because there weren't a lot of manual transmission models made. So if you still plan on doing a 1jz swap, you still have to do a manual transmission conversion. So it really just comes down to personal preference and long term goals. The 1uz's got killer potential, but the 1jz's easily got more aftermarket support. But keep in mind that any jdm swap is never a simple process. I've gone through it twice with two of my 240's. Sure once they're in, it's a blast but you have to anticipate damn near everything going wrong because sometimes it just happens that way. Swapping in a 20 year old motor from japan isn't aways the magical "cure all" for your car. But I vote manual tranny conversion for the v8, that's just bragging rights and some cool factor right there.

the money you'd spend on the w58 swap, get a 1jz engine. the 1uz especially if its high mileage is HELL to work on. JZ's are know to be quiet and very very reliable. You can get a 1jz w/r154(stronger tranny) for 1800 if you look right, ofcourse you'll spend about another 500-1000 getting it in but it will be more worth it than just swapping in a w58 that has a tendency to break. NOW, if you can find a newer w58 from a 95^ na supra, i will hold my tongue.

Most people are using the 95+ W58. I'm using a 91+ MKIII W58 but it is the "strengthened" version with the steel sandwich plate just like the 95+.

Honestly, bang for buck, the steel kit is where its at. The aluminum flywheel is 11.1lbs or so, the steel is around 17lbs... which is super light for a steel flywheel. So unless you are going for very quick throttle response, the steel flywheel is a good choice. Now version 2 of the aluminum should be under the 10lbs mark, but not in production yet.

Appreciate all the love, I tried making my 2 sites informative as possible, along with the Quantum site.

That's kinda what a lot of people are missing. Since you already have an engine worth while in the car, why not play with it... Instead of following the "in" crowd... although the price is nice, cant go wrong.

The steel sandwhich plate W58's are stronger in every respect. The MK4/SC3 W58's have different size bearings than the steel sandwhich plate MK3's, makes it stronger? Who knows. Quantum also has a very nice version of the R154 adapter which adapts a Tilton Slave.. should be available soon to the public. The pic is on the site.

Does lightened flywheel make that much of a difference?
