Default PROS vs CONS of going turbo

Hey guys

I have a 93 sc400 with about 145 000 kilometres---I think that is about 90 000 miles-----and I was wondering what are the pros and cons of boosting with a turbo.

Obviously the car would be much faster and more fun to drive----but what are some of the drawbacks

--does it affect the lifespan of your engine---if so how much

--can it cause major engine problems

--can you turbo an engine as old as mine

--is the power you get from it worth the price

--can the 1uz be properly fitted with a good turbo-----I only hear about sc300's being boosted

--what --if anything----do you need to do to your engine or car before boosting with a turbo-----can you just bolt it on and get going---or is there proper maintenance or part swapps that need to be done first.

--can the auto tranny of the sc400 handle a boost

--the drivetrain same thing

Thanks in advance guys

There are a couple sc400 build threads on here. I suggest you take a look at those....

turboing the sc400 is not easy and not cheap. It's probably a better idea to do a swap.

Turbo the V8, but it's a lot of work. Btw, your question has been answered many times on this forum. Just search a little.

yes-- depends on how thought out it is.
--can it cause major engine problems
see above
--can you turbo an engine as old as mine
sure.
--is the power you get from it worth the price
that is a matter of opinion (but yes)
--can the 1uz be properly fitted with a good turbo-----I only hear about sc300's being boosted
just about any engine can be turbo'd
--what --if anything----do you need to do to your engine or car before boosting with a turbo-----can you just bolt it on and get going---or is there proper maintenance or part swapps that need to be done first.
proper maintenance, but you can't "just" slap a turbo on, there is other stuff that needs doing.
--can the auto tranny of the sc400 handle a boost
depends (supposed to be good for 400hp, i think)
--the drivetrain same thing
meh. you will want to upgrade stuff, but it will handle more than stock.
Thanks in advance guys

You should search a bit or look for scotturnot's build thread although he went supercharged. 90k is still considered pretty low imo, just make sure you do your 100k mainteince though.

Thanks Benstoked and everyone.

I did look at some of the other threads but they couldnt specificlaly answer some of the questions I had.

Like is it wise to turbo an older engine----and what sort of upgrades would I need to do before adding a turbo.

Also I cant seem to find a str8 answer on how much it would cost to put on a decent turbo----some threads have people saying a thousand dollars...others are saying up to $5000?

Anyways ill be in here and searching and im sure between the two I will find the info I need.

Thanks again guys

Yes from being in this lexus forum for the past while ive noticed that it is mostly sc300's that get boosted.

Everyone says it is easier and cheaper.

I dont know why it is so difficult to boost the v8.

My guess is there isnt much room for one?

Or does that fact that the v6's are straight inline engines as opposed to v style of the v8's make a dif?

Im gonna look into it.

Thanks

http://www.amazon.com/Maximum-Boost-...5308908&sr=8-1

I can not recommend that book enough. You will learn SO much about how and why a turbo system makes power. It should be required reading for anybody new to boosting engines, and is a great resource for even salty gear heads. I actually have a copy 2 feet from my right now under my nightstand haha.
