Default What the...? Calling all rotary people...

I was on 19th Ave. in San Francisco tonight and I raced a 3rd-gen RX-7, like a '93 or so that was stock and had a manual transmission. What I don't understand is that he couldn't pull away from me. I heard his motor wind up, and I saw his car lurch every time he shifted, but up to 80 MPH when we had to slow for the next light he didn't change position. Aren't those cars supposed to be really fast, even stock? It didn't look bad at all, had a stock spoiler on it and everything. With a lighter load than I had on my track day (I need to get gas tomorrow...) when I ran a 15.1 I suppose I could've been a little quicker, but I still can't figure out how a guy winding that thing up like he did couldn't pull on me, I expected to get smoked.

I would say his motor was not in good shape. Those cars have major problems with all kinds of different things that could really slow them down.

yeah he could have just been pacing you
rotary's are also loud too may have been going easy , could have been close to needing a rebuild .. sounds like he needs something.

Didn't they offer the FD3S in an NA version? There's a local Silver RX7, that i've beaten two or three times, I can only assume it's NA, since i'm getting him by a carlength right outta the hole, which is pretty pathetic for him considering how slow the SC4 is

As a former supraTT(411rwhp auto stock turbos no nos) owner I do know a little about the 3rd gen Rx7tt's. Many things can go wrong which can drastically reduce times. One of his turbos could have been blown or he could have had a problem with one of the actuators therefor only getting boost from one turbo. A stock rx7tt manual will pull high 13's. He should have blown you away but obviously there was something turbo related that caused his downfall. Plus those motors are ****. Id take an sc400 with 200k on it before a mazda rotary with 50k.

I think you must be thinking of the second gen RX7 which did come in sever different versions (see above)

All 3rd Gen Rx7 are Twin Turbo in stock form.

All 3rd gens are twinturbo, some are 5-speeds, some are autos

there are 3.5 trims

base
touring
R1 (93 model)
R2 (94-95 model)

3rd gens have a problem with vacuum hoses coming loose sometimes... and they are sensitive to detonation... if the owner modifies it and doesn't have a clue what he's doing, its gonna blow pretty quick...

the idea that they are unreliable is BS; a good handful of 3rd gens in the 9s and 10s on their 1st motor

the guy was prolly hitting safety boost which is around 7psi and yanks a lot of timing... it happens when vacuum hoses go out... the car ends up spooling up very slowly and won't pull at all...

running correctly they trap around 100mph stock and are nearly as fast as a SupraTT when you do the correct mods for the stock turbos... usually around 114-116mph traps
when going to single turbos they are just as fast as the Supras... Clint had his *** dusted by Pluto's ride about a year or so ago for example...

With those rotary engines, how much mileage can you expect to get out of them without needing to do any major work? i've heard numbers spanning a huge range.

At 2 AM nuts for 19th is more like 120... soooo many people race there it's not even funny.
The guy seemed to be spooling slow, but remember, he was totally stock as far as I could tell.

Question What does "FD" stand for?

I didn't have much interest in RX-7's until I heard of an RX-7 forum member stealing another member's car (details at:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...threadid=51472 ).

They kept on using the term "FD" - what's that stand for?

FD is just a 3rd gen RX-7 FC is 2nd gen and FB/SA 1st gen

oh ya.
FD FC FB or SA are the 1st letters two in the VIN #

so I dont think it actually stands for anything I could be wrong
