Default SC400 manual tranny conversion options

I know there's been quite a bit of information floating around about converting our SC400's over to a manual transmission. I know that this is a project I'll be undertaking early next year with a friend who is quite a competent mechanic. Now, I understand what's the commonhouse way of going about the conversion and the majority of the parts I will be needing. My question is, has anyone attempted and successfully used another transmission for this conversion. I understand that among other aspects, a custom adapter plate would have to be made. But with limited and costly availability of Supra transmission, what about using one off of a twin turbo z32, or even a Chevy 350 tranny? And without having to say "With the right amount of money anything's possible", I was wondering if it would be cost effective to make the attempt.
