MAF = mass-air flow, a flange that has a meter attached to it that measures the air flow to create the best fuel mixture. MAF was used on VVTi models (1998 and up).
VAF = volume-air flow, the sensor used on pre-1998 models.
An MAF adaptor is just a bolt-on collar with a 3-inch flange that allows you to attach aftermarket cone filters to your intake runner.

You can't bypass it because it screws into the old stock screw holes to hold your new filter into place....the mouth that sticks out from the MAF adapter is what you put inside the filter.....if you didn't have one....well....umm....make sure you have some worthwhile hopes and dreams,... and somebody under the hood to hold the filter on while you're driving
. You can pretty much get one at any place you would get a cone filter... www.optionsauto.com is one that comes to mind....eBay usually has one floating around somewhere, its where I got mine.... filter and adapter for 70 I think. Best of luck.
