Now, I'm ready to start saving up for either na-t or 1jz (2jz is out of the budget for the foreseeable future). Iv'e read a lot of posts and they have answered most of my questions, but given the following circumstances, give me some suggestions on the best route.
1) its an obd2 car and I live in Oregon where we have emissions testing
2) I have no experience with ANY engine work and not many tools (ive changed oil and done minor audio stuff) which leads to number 3
3) Will have to be done at a shop
4) its my daily driver
5)money is a somewhat issue (I'm a student who lives at home and works part time)

Any input appreciated!!

NA-T done at a shop will be cheaper IMO... depending on what you are aiming for.

Thanks msc300

I'm not looking for crazy hp right now, around 300 to the wheels would be nice. But with such high milage wouldnt I have to rebuild the engine before boosting?

Based on what ive read... the bottom end on the GE is stout as hell. As long as its not damaged or smoking you should be fine.

Nice pick up. The high mileage shouldn't really be an issue but it wouldn't hurt to rebuild it. I know a member here with 300K+ miles running na-t. Pretty sweet too.

Nice car! NA-T should be fine on your car if the engine is in good shape or you could do a 1JZ swap.

I agree with the others, NA-T is the best way to go on a budget. But as I've said to so many friends, anticipate problems before dumping what money you have on go fast parts. Any kind of maintenence needs that could come up in the not too distant future should be addressed. Plan what everything will cost and expect it to cost more, budget and wait for the best deals, and be patient. Especially if this is your daily driver and your only mode of transportation.

thanks for all the positive feedback guys. I definitely have learned that doing anything to cars is always going to cost more than originally planned, and I can deal to an extent. But what would be the cost effective way to go NA-T because the cheapest kit I've seen on Horsepowerfreaks.com was around 5,000 if I remember correctly.

My Evo passed emissions while running somewhere in the neighborhood of 450 whp. Just because your car is modified or has higher HP, doesnt mean its blows clouds of smoke. A well tuned car will pass emissions just like any other.
