Default crazy overheating problem for great minds lol sc400 help

Ok. So my sc overheats probably once every 3 months. Usually it will be mysteriously out of coolant. But today its 17 degrees and it overheated I pulled over added like 2 cups of coolant then it stopped running hot.....but started running cold!!!! The temp gauge went slowly all the way to c. Now mind you I work 30 miles from home and this happened after I been driving 30 minutes. I drove for another 15 min and it kept dropping. I put a new failsafe thermostat in October. What can be wrong. Ps no leaks and coolant in exhaust.

Well the failsafe mode is designed to die stuck open isn't it? That would explain going cold.

I'm gonna check it when I get off but that's correct its suppose to fail open. But why would it just go cold the longer I drive?

I would test the true temperature with a multimeter to make sure it isn't your gauge. I know my gauge reads way off.

If it's 17 degrees and you are running at any significant speed, you are getting an enormous amount of passive cooling right there just from the air passing through the radiator. It could be that with an open thermostat you are actually overcooling the engine. Semi trucks run covers over their enormous radiators in the winter to avoid over cooling.

My Sc looses coolant ou of no where too. I think it's the radiator cap letting the coolant out. It only does it after long pulls on the freeway tho.

I had this happen to my sc. The return line that connects right next to the thermostat was rusted and plugged from rust and corrosion. The car would overheat once every three months randomly.

I would blow through the metal nipple and make sure that it is not blocked or corroded so that the coolant can flow freely through it.

Good way to check for leaks during a prolong period of time is to look for dry coolant residue surrounding any rubber connections.
