Anyone painted their own sc?
Hey guys, i'm thinking about getting a spray gun and compressor and learning how to paint cars. I work as a painter in the summer and I think it would be great to learn how to do..
Has anyone on here painted their own sc? please post pics if you have, thanks

Im actually about to do this. Funny you made this thread. I actually bought my paint last week and its going to be here tomorrow! I will definatly post up pics of how it turns out. I am doing a pretty cool color. I really like the color and I hope it comes out like I want it to. I have dont hours of research on how to paint and basically you just need to read/watch a ton of videos. Prep work is extremely important to how its going to turn out. Obviously you need to have a place to do it and you need to know a little about painting. My dad has a paint gun he used to paint some GTO we used to have. I am going to use that gun (because apparently its pretty good), and we have a BIG Ingersol Rand compressor im going to be using. I cant wait to start this project. I didnt spend a lot on paint because this is my first time and all, but I do think I will be able to do a good job. Let me know if you have any questions. I can help with what I have read/heard through the grapevine about painting.

60% prep
30% practice
10% tools
Case in point the SC in the pictures above looks like a pretty good job, I dont know his skill level or equipment quality, but from 2-5 feet away it looks pretty damn decent...
FAILURE in prepping...painted keyholes, painted exhaust.....
I've seen some awesome jobs in the most unusual "paint booths" by people who are super meticulous on prep work... it makes for a near perfect shoot with minimal cut and buffing....
I've painted several pieces but never a whole car, at least in one shot, if nothing else its worth the experience....
at worst you waste a couple hundred in supplies and your time, and still have to take it to a shop, but gain a lot of experience
at best you have a great looking new paint job by you for only a few hundred...
Painting is like poker, its all about patience and timing... if you wanna rush you have a 50/50 chance you'll come out on top.
Good Luck

I have painted a decent amount myslef. And I agree with all that everyone has said so far, its all in the prep work, if you dont have a straight body line you will get waves in the paint, if there is any imperfections it will pop once the clear coat is on the vehicle. How we paint in my dads machine shed is ladders with plastic wrap draped down to the floor and taped down, also with tons and tons of tape to seal the cracks. But the most important, it is heated and very well ventilated to help the paint bake as soon as possible, and doesnt stir much dust up. If i were you i would go to the junk yard and get some scrap pieces of metal, doors, hoods, deck lids, etc. and practice on those so you can get used to how the paint and the gun works together. Take your time and never forget this... if you dont get the area in your first pass, you can always get it the next time around, dont rush this project. Good luck, if you have any more questions let me know.
