Default Fried Instrument Cluster, trying to replace the bulbs inside it !!!

How do you determine the polarity of the bulb placements if it's not labeled?

It's not my first time replacing the bulbs in the instrument cluster with LEDs. I had blue leds first time, but wanted them brighter, so bought a 3 led # 74 bulb.

The first time I replaced the bulb with LEDs, it was trial and error. If you replaced the bulbs before, you'll know that there are 8 bulbs that illuminate the majority of the instrument cluster. I simply took all 8 incandescent bulbs out, put in the leds, started my car, noticed where the lights were not lit, removed the cluster again, and flipped the polarity.

Just tried again with new bulbs, and within 5 seconds of turning car on, the instrument panel started smoking ! I quickly removed key, removed the cluster, and opened it back up, and noticed the middle ribbon connection was melted.

The cluster is surely now toast.

How do you determine polarity of the bulbs on these things so I don't fry my next?? The socket doesn't have a + - nor the bulb.

Wow...that's inconvenient....Sorry to hear. I am planning to change my cluster bulbs to LEDs too, this is def news to me. I have no answer to provide, but would surely like to know if anyone does.

btw, I thought they were 194 bulbs in the cluster, not 74's? Guess i'm mistaken.

This was the first time I changed my lights.

I ordered #74 and they slipped in fine, perhaps it's same size as 194? Ordered #74 twice so it's prob safer to go with that size.

If they slipped in fine, then ya, they're 74's....I thought I read up somewhere they're 194's tho...but 194's are bigger wedge bulbs....so now I'm stumped lol...
