I'm willing to bet that most people with these goals haven't drivin a 500hp car.
1j all day. Best bang for buck. Marlin Crawler gear company has upgrades for R154 if you are that serious.
It's a jz, doesn't matter which one, they all rock!
A 2jz and w54 is like a 12v cummins and its stock trans. Engine will crap horsepower out easy, but the trans will turn in to baby puke.

i know it wasnt one of your choices posted
but i think you should look into going na-t
with some searching you can definitely piece a kit together fairly cheap
and every once and awhile someone sells their turbo setup for a steal
or driftmotion/ suprastore has budget kits for around 1500 new(still will need management and fuel)
which ever you choose i would try and get an r154(get a mk3 one, much cheaper)
im very happy with my 1jz/r154 setup
but with the money ive dealt out i could have a nice na-t/r154 setup
really should determine a solid budget and that will help you narrow your choice
just me .02

Read people, he gave you guys options to pick, what's with all the 2jzgte and r154, why not just say 2jzgte with getrag? He did say money was an issue like 3 times.
Get the 2jzgte with w58, it's a lot easier to change transmission than to find out you probably would like a different engine more, specially once you put a fair bit of money into it. Also, if your power goal is only 300-400, w58 will hold, I've seen W58 hold 450 no problem, it all depends on how you drive and what you use it for, if you daily cruise, w58 is enough, if you track it, get a r154 later on when you need it.
By the way, if you destroy your w58, it's only a few hundred to replace, no big deal.
