Default Thinking about getting a 1JZ SC400

So I currently drive a 94 BMW 325ic, I put it up for trade on craigslist. A guy wants to trade his 97' TT 1JZ Sc400 for my car, before even asking when to meet up, I asked him whats wrong with it, and he sends some pics.

So the car is an automatic, he said that the car would not shift past 1st gear, and it said its some transmission sensor? Also it has some slight quarter panel damage. Besides that the car seems pretty good from what I can tell, the interior is clean. Has 78K on the chassis, and is slightly modded.

I was wondering what could be the problem? He said he got quoted $285 to fix the problem, but you can never trust a sellers words fully.

I just dont want to have to drop any transmissions, because I just got done doing that in my BMW.

Thanks for the help.

how much is your bmw worth? .. 97 with 1jz and only 78 on the chassis sounds pretty good.. as far as the transmission.. do a manual swap! =D

+1 If its a sensor figure out which one and if you can change it yourself, if its a tranny there are some cheap jz trannies around on the for sale section or just do a manual swap..

My car is probably worth about $4K max. I really want this SC but that transmission problem is bugging me, since the guy is about 80miles away.

I did a little more research and the only sensor I can find is the speed sensor. Could it cause the car to stay in only 1st if its bad?

Also the quarter panel damage is kinda bad also, I would do it if it only had scrapes but it looks like it caught onto something and tore it back a little

the tranny may be bad altogether. once you find that out then you will have your answer on whether to swap or not.

people gloss over all real problems when selling a car. expect the worst but you never know.

you could always do a manual swap.

Could be shift solenoids. I think that this ca runs the A340E tranny which is very similar to the A340h which is what I had on my 4 Runner prior to my SC400. There is a lock up solenoid and 2 shift solenoids. They work in tandem to tell the car what gear to be in. They ru about $150 for a set and are quite easy to install. Requires dropping the transmission pan. Ask the guy if his over drive light is flashing. If it is have him pull the code. That will tell you for sure. Jumper TE1 and E1, turn the key to acc and count the flashes. Good luck.
