Question My power steering is acting strange

The history is it went out once, and I had it rebuilt. Heres what it does.

If I'm at a red light and I start to steer as I let out the clutch to begin moving, it makes a nasty grind noise and feels like it vibrates. When standing still and turning the wheel, it whines. It doesnt do this 100% all the time, but its beginning to get more common. It started about a week and half ago.

Car is a 1997 5spd. Thanks for ideas on what I can check out myself before I end up taking it to a shop.

Ashtray-

My 94 sc started doing the same thing. I will flush the power steering system this weekend and add some Lucus treatment to see if that helps. Will post my results.

my 95 sc400 does the same thing as well. Although I have noticed that this mainly happens in colder weather. Temporary fix was to add the factory power steering fluid and the sound effects immediately stop.

Sounds good I'll wait to hear back from you on that.

Yes I've also noticed it happens more in the colder weather. You know how much and in what quantities the PS fluid comes in? Thanks

I had the same thing in my SC4, plus the steering felt heavy. I simply topped off the fluid (doing the turn the wheel thing) and it stopped..

I don't think this is one of those things where it matters, plus I think all power steering fluid might be the same? (don't quote me on that though..)
If your really picky call the dealership and ask, I just used some generic brand.

Sounds like you have air in the system. If you succesfuly got all the air out of the system then sounds like you need another PS Pum.

OK, I flushed the power steering system with 2 quarts of synthetic Mobil 1 ATF fluid then added some Lucas power steering treatment and bled it all. The whining noise stopped but my PS pump still makes a low rumbling noise. I will be changing out the the pump. Flushing the system did get rid of the whining noise though.
You might just have to change out your power steering pump and be done with.
