Default exhaust question, please help!!!

Hey everyone, I'm a newbie here and I need some expertise. I recently bought a 1992 SC300 5spd. The car is in pretty good shape for it's age and drives good! I bought it as a second vehicle since I also have a truck and wanted something to have fun with. I've read a lot of the post and my priority is maintenance. Having said that, my first task is to work on the exhaust. I know that there's a hole somewhere and Im assuming its the downpipe. I'm still getting exhaust out of the mufflers so I'm assuming it isn't too big. The car is loud and I can feel a lose of power when I'm driving. The thing that's bothering is the smell. It isn't a normal exhaust smell, but it's one that smells like something is burning. I don't smell it in the car, or when I pop the hood. I don't see any leaks and I smell it when i get out of the car.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

When the car is cold, have a friend help you and use some rags to close up the exhaust exits on the mufflers. Let it idle and hold those things closed. If you close if off good you will hear where the exhaust leak is coming from.

Thanks for that tip. But would a leak cause a burning smell?
