I would MUCH rather cut than heat. There are too many variables to play around with heating metal. At least with cut springs, you can kind of predict the spring rate. There is too much at stake with heating.
well typically the last coil on the spring is usually a "dead" coil so it wont really effect anything however i still highly suggest it is not done. you can have problems with improper seating on the spring on the perch or mount.
I have always wondered what the risks were in cutting springs. I have always heard it was dangerous and pretty stupid. My advice is to learn by experience. Thats your decision in what you plan on doing. Let us know which side you cut, top or bottom, and the outcome. Also post pictures. ^^ That looks like someone heat up the spring. Cutting it won't lead you to that since the metal's properties aren't tampered by the heat treatment. More reason for people not to do things they don't know about.
