Default 99 SC300 for $6900 or 98 SC400 for $4900 which one?

Hey guys, new to this forum. I don't have a Lexus of my own yet, but I have been driving my dad's 2002 ES for the past two years, I learned how to drive in that. Its a fun car to drive, its not really sporty but the ride is smooth and I enjoy driving it.

Its time for me to get my own car now. I'm fairly certain I don't want an American car (I just don't like them) or a European car (repair costs). Japanese is the way to go then. Was considering a 350z but thats outta my budget, which is around 8k- 9k.

I found a Black 1999 SC300 on Craigslist for $6900. It has about 127k miles, Sport package, premium sound, CD Changer. From the pictures the exterior is in very good condition, no dents, scratches, shines like glass. Engine bay is clean, no dirt/dust build up. Looks well taken care of.

EDIT***
Found an SC400 for 5k, what do you think?

What are your opinons? Is it a solid first buy? Reliable, fun car?

-Thanks

99 SC300 is a nice buy, maybe not for that much see if you can bring him down a little more. If you are local go check it out make sure all the maintenance is done timing belt etc etc. Search around and see what to look for when buying a SC.

Preferably if your looking for 98+ get the sc400

personally i say the price is a tad high because of the mileage although im sure some others here will disagree because it is a 99.

This is just my opinion , I would much rather have a car a few years older with lower mileage and a lower price and in the end it will last you much longer for less money.

Just to give you an idea im not trying to brag at all, I purchased my 93 sc400 with around 80 000 miles for $2400 although i was extremely lucky , most do not find deals like that .

Although it needed some minor work it was still a fantastic deal and the car is still running strong.

If you take your time you can certainly find some deals out there.

I wish you good luck either way on your purchase.

looks clean. if the interior is in good condition and the maintenance has been taken care of its not a bad deal - about on par with nada. but im sure you can get them down to 6k if youre a good negotiator.

Better buy than the SC300 I'm thinking.

Its depends what you want to do with the car if the 300 or 400 is more suited to your goals. If you plan on keeping the engine stock or very mildly modified I'd probably go with the 400. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of power to be made with a 400, but the upgrades are very expensive compared to the 300. If you want to modify the engine, like with a turbo or two, the 300 is far easier to upgrade on a budget. I had originally wanted a 400 (Toyota v8 ftw!) but after some research I decided the 300 was more in line with what I wanted to do power wise and budget wise.

I don't really know right now. I doubt I'd be doing anything to the engine, I know how maintain my car, changing the fluids, brakes, tires, maintenance, etc. but not so much about the engine. Turbo, doubt it until I graduate and have more money/time to spend on my car. Other small mods, maybe.

I definitely want to do some cosmetic ones though. Body kit, tints, rims. Not ricey crap though, its a Lexus, not a civic.

Dunno, parents are gonna pay for it. And then I'll give them some of my wages during the summer.

The SC400 on craigslist. The guy has installed a steering wheel from the SC430 in it. Is that compatible? Anyone else do it on this forum with all the features working? I don't want to get in an accident because something went wrong with the steering and the airbag doesn't deploy.

get the car for 6g's if everything is in working order and there is NONE to minimal amount of rust. 99's are very nice cars. Mod it tastefully and you will love the car

If your not planning on doing any engine work like turbos or whatever I would say get a sc400 forsure.

It has much more power, sounds nicer and will last longer.
Just my opinion.
