@Darksaga
The vast majority who see these cars have no idea what they are, what they are capable of, or why they are special. Most people I have talked to about SC's know absolutely zero about them. I talked with guy at work who owns a GS300, he didn't know anything about his engine and where it came from, he thought his car was front wheel drive until I told him it wasn't. To most people these cars are modes of transportation and thats about it.

When you go to look at it take a refrigerator magnet with you. Those are so weak that if there is more than a tiny smear of filler it won't stick to the body. If there is no or very little filler the damage will be easier to fix.

looks to me like tha rear quarter panel "may" have been painted already which is not good.
Take a better look at the car and shoot him a fairly low offer see where it goes from there.
Me personally I would not pay more than $3000.00 or so depending on the condition, regardless if its a 98 or not.
And fatbrian good idea with the magnet, ive never thought of it but it sopunds like it just might work .
Anyways i have a good eye for body work but thats always good to know.

If there's not a metric ton of filler in that quarter and the maintenance is verifiable this may not be an entirely hopeless purchase, you just need to know what you're getting into. You just need to know as much as possible about the condition of the car body wise but also mechanically. If its a largely highway driven, well maintained vehicle with some mostly cosmetic body damage you could come out with a win here if you do your homework. This peach may be a little bruised but you can still make a pie with it.

as we all know it is a very dificult job to replace a quarter panel on these cars , unlike a fender or bumper or something.
the paint looking dull on that quarter panel could mean it has had work done ----and shotty work at that .
My honda that I painted on my driveway looks like that .
You might be getting the same quality of repair---some driveway job.
