Hi, all

I have 92 SC300 and need to change rear diff... I have the part... but the shop that I go to wants $450 just for the labor and the other one wants $300...

I have a mechanic friend and he said that it is 2 hrs job... so I shouldn't be paying that much...

Any recommendation?

when i did my diff swap for my IS300 my guy charged me 250

its easy to do. if you have a jack and stands with the tools you can do it yourself. the worst part about the whole thing is that its heavy. but be sure to torque that part of your car to spec!!!!!!!! dont want a axle flying off. my friend learned the hard way with his s13 haha

^ yes do it yourself-it is a pretty easy task once you get the car in the air and get a look at it.save the money u would pay someone else to do it and use that money for more upgrades-my 2 cents-good luck

One way of looking at this is like this:

Think of all the tools you could buy with the $300-$450 worth of labor you would be paying for. Plus you get to keep the tools (and the practical experience) forever and save on the next job that comes around.

I fhe is not mechanically inclined he shouldn't be touching the rear end. We'll end up with some dead kind crushed by a dropped diff under the car.

It shouldnt take long for a mechanic to do this at all. Tooke me 4 hours max to do mine and I had to go buy the sockets to get the axel bolts off so that waster 45 minutes I also dropped the entire subframe and put in spacers and welded the new diff in that time.

So I would say $250-300 at max

Once the car is in the air it's an hour job, tops. Hardest part is busting the axle bolts loose.

I did to drop the diff and pull it all the way out, made it much easier with it out of the way.

I thought about doing it myself as well, but a shop quoted me 75 bucks. Pretty tough to say no. If the mechanic is experienced it should be a quick job.

man, 75 bucks... i asked them to replace rear bushing sets as well since they told me that they have to drop whole rear end down... and it is 8 hrs job... bs...

Drop the exhaust, disconnect the axels, disconnect the sway bar mounts, remove the differential. It's a 1 hour job tops.
