I was thinking the other day about these things.
What if you opened up the light housing and covered the inner casing with mylar tape, than built a little curve so the beam pattern points more straight. Anyone think this would work?
Picture of example:
(imagine looking at it from the top)
the gray area would be tape and the red would be something you put in to avoid the sideways beam pattern. i also forgot to draw that there would be mylar tape covering the red so it reflects backwards

Not a bad idea, but I have a better one:

retrofit...those are almost identical to what I placed inside my factory cornering lamp housings, with a set of HID's, and when they are off, you cant even tell.

Just a couple of reference pics for you:
Fitting the lamp inside the housing

Mounted and on, before adjustment and the HID's till warming up

Horrible Cell phone pic of both sides on, with the lenses and complete, but the lights were adjusted more after

During the day with the lights off:

Faux fogs will simply not yield the same results, with reflective tape or not. The PIAA styled lights I used take a 962 (IIRC) style bulb, and fit perfectly in the housings. Took about 2 hours to fit both sides and that included making the brackets.
It costs more than the faux fog, but the results are far greater, and actually serve a purpose.
