Default Crazy screeching sound from under the hood. ABS?

I got a crazy screeching sound every once in a while that lasts for 30 seconds while idling. Sounded like it was coming from the dash but just had my mechanic look at it and he says it's coming from the ABS unit in the engine bay. They don't know what's wrong with it yet. Has anyone had this problem? It sounds like metal scraping metal, always goes away after 30 seconds. No warning lights are on and it doesn't seem to be affecting performance at all. My car has no other issues and is running great.

First thing that comes to mind is a pulley or the belt slipping; more accurately, it almost sounds like your A/C compressor. You notice the screech when the compressor engage and disengage?

It sounds pretty weird for it to be the ABS pump, but hey . . . you come across new stuff all the time. I'm pretty sure there is an ABS fuse; as a simple process of elimination to verify your mechanics comment, you might want to pull it and see if the noise still happens. Remember though, you won't have ABS while the fuse is pulled, so drive accordingly.

Make sure its not the harmonic balancer pulley. It might be separating. Do you hear it when your start the car, or punch it? Turning on the ac does it sometimes to.

timing belt was replaced 16k miles ago, i just had the serpentine belt replaced yesterday. it actually hasn't been making the noise since yesterday, maybe replacing the belt solved the issue?

easy way to find out if it was the belt or not is take the dang belt off and turn the car on....still making noise its the crank pulley if not then it was the belt have a nice day...

started making the noise again on start up, so it wasn't the serpentine belt. i switched the AC on and off but that didn't stop the noise. after about 30 seconds it stopped again. i do not hear it when i punch the throttle.

Why did your mechanic think it was the ABS? Was he just guessing, or did he actually investigate the problem before he said that?

I second removing the fan belt, its a great way to identify if you have an accessory squeaking or not. Don't let it run for long that way, for diagnostic purposes only.
