it is a good idea to replace, but again, I'm curious whether anyone has actually had a broken belt on this car or any other. I replace every 100K, but never even see much wear.

You can do it yourself. You just have to jump in there. Along the way you will learn a ton about that car and pretty soon you can work on it in your sleep. Just take apart slowly. Pay attention to where everything goes and tale lots of pictures for reference.

making sure you put it back in right,

i have a 1uz from my parts sc400 i was going to build with bent valves sitting in my garage cause the guy put the timing belt in wrong. The guy told me it was a crankshaft sensor gone bad

my mechanic just got back to me, said he can do timing belt crank seal and cam seals for $450. are the cam seals and valve cover gaskets the same thing? thats a damn good price if it is. i can wait on the power steering hose.

No, the cam seals go around the cams, the valve cover gasket goes around the valve covers. Is he changing the water pump also? May as well have him change the front main seal while he is in there also.

a mechanic over on lextreme said he seen 1uz with the original timing belt with 200,000+ miles and the belt wasn't even showing wear. I have never heard of anyone breaking them.

but then again its always better to be safe then sorry.

cost included front seals. valve cover gaskets are $278 more. sheesh. ill wait on those. for $500, ill make sure this engine goes to 300K no problems.

i know the 2jz is not an interference engine.

doing water pump as well. gonna run me $550,only 83 in parts. this guy works at the toyota plant and does work on the side.

I believe Scott has an SC400, I've seen a few places where the 1uz is an interference engine.

Here is my understanding. The 92-96 1uzfe engine is non-interference. In 96 the 1uzfe became a vvt-I engine with 60 more horses. This engine is interference.
