Default Automatic 1j sputtering under boost

Recently my 1J has been doing this thing where from about 3k on its feels like its sputtering, it continues to rev up but its very slow. It makes a tttatatattatatata noise, almost like its blowing off really fast. I just changed the plugs about a week ago to NGK BKR6E's gapped to .30. Its a stock motor with just a cone air filter, no exhaust or FMIC. What would I want to start looking towards? If you look at the boost gauge its not holding steady its little needle is bouncing around between 10-12 really fast.

Thanks.

Still on stock twins, automatic transmission

check for Boost leaks, coils for any damage, and ECU if you have any leaking capacitators.

Thank you, reading through it now. Am I using the correct spark plugs? I also noticed under vaccum it revs fine, but under boost it freaks out and starts breaking up.

So I pulled the ECU and looked at it, none of the caps. are leaking nor are there any burn marks. It looks like it was opened and repaired back in 2009 though as there is a tag on the back dated from then. Also found a Greddy Boost Cut Defender SW20 for it.

What are the plugs I want to be running on this thing?

You mentioned that this just recently happened. How long ago?

What year is your SC? I read somewhere on later models where there was something about cutting a single black wire on the body plug. This helped some of the 3k sputter for some members. Check the link below

About 2-3 days ago it started when it started getting warmer outside. Its a 1992 body. I thought I read that only the 95's had that black wire to snip. Ill check out those links tomorrow though when Im at work.

That usually happens to my car when the spark plugs are in need of change. NGK BKR7E's. Copper plugs works like a charm...

Come to think of it, the car was doing this before I changed the plugs, then ran great for 2-3 days, then started running progressively worse. What effect would going to a 1 step hotter plug have on the car since thats what I did. Would it cause the plugs to foul out quickly? Would a bad PCV valve cause the plugs to go ka-put in 2-3 days time? I know the 1j had that recall for it. I also noticed that there is a bit of white smoke at idle from time to time. Would that be due to the PCV?

I had this problem. I can almost guarantee it's the coilpacks going bad. Pull them out and look for hair line cracks under the blue boots. you are better off replacing all the coilpacks, but they are very pricey.

coilpacks or Boost leak, it sounds like you have your plugs in a decent spot.
