Default Car is worst after tune up???......

Hey guys,

So i bought a 92 sc300 with 190k. Upon purchase, I know it needed a tune up, and an exhaust leak that needed to be done, but ran good overall. I did the following this past weekend: plugs, wires, timing belt, valve cover and oil pan gaskets, oil change, and straight piped a rusted out cat that was causing the leak.

I picked it up, it sounded ok. But this morning, poof! Slight smoke on start up. And not only that, there is rattle coming from the bottom end on start up and on take off. WTF??? Ive had plently of cars, and usually AFTER a much needed tune, the car runs great. Do i need to put an additive to shut it up? Im guessing it had one before.

Btw, the car runs great! Plenty of power, no lack of power, or stalling AT ALL. Drove it from my house in PA which is a 110 mile drive at 80 mph with no sign of any smoke or engine failure.

Anyone ever had similiar symtoms?

Did the smoke come out of the exhaust or was it engine-bay burn off?

Recheck the spark plugs, they can cause lots of problems. Either the type you got or the gap. All your tuneup parts OEM?

Recheck timing?

Did you mess with the MAF sensor?

hey guys, thanks for the responses.

The smoke is coming from the tailpipe. Not a smoke storm, but def noticable.

The work was done by a local shop that i have been going to for years.

About the timing, i spoke to my mechanic, and he said to throw a bottle of lucas in there. Believe it or not, its running a bit better. as for the engine noise, he also says that the timing may be slightly off. How true is this?> what kind of noise do these engine make when the timing is off?

Thanks!

the spark plugs are flaky. i once took my timing cover off and didnt touch anything, put it back on and mine started running like crap. never had an idling problem before or anything. ended up reseating the wires making sure contacts were all good. finally cleared it up.

i still have no idea how anything came loose when i didnt do anything but thats how it goes.
so maybe recheck all wires, maf, throttle position sensor etc.

car will run pretty bad if at all with timing off as well.

The cam timing could cause the noise that you're talking about and smoke out the exhaust but you would also experience a loss of power.

As far as your "mechanic" telling you to throw a bottle of Lucas in, I wouldn't go back to him. Lucas is good for cleaning, but after a GOOD tune up by a REPUTABLE mechanic you shouldn't have to for a while.

thanks again. I am gunna take the car back in and have the timing checked out.

About my mechanic, to be honest, he never "told" me to put lucas in it. I actually told him i was going to put a bottle in, and he sed ok. But i do understand ur point, thanks

as for price, he only charged me 350 for everything, again, ive been going to him for years.

Hey sounds kinda similar to what I got going on after my tune up. The power is definitely there but startup and takeoff is a lil sketchy. What I'm thinkin is that the ecu on these 92's which was probably going bad already can't re-tune to the new bits.

That sounds better on the Lucas . $350 is a great price.
