You can find them in the ~$400 range, but you've got to be really patient.

Stock for stock, the W58 is actually more delicate than the automatic in the SCs... in the 400, anyway. I don't know if the 300 used a different auto transmission. But the auto in the 400 can take about 400 hp... the W58 can only take, from what I've read anyway, 350.

There is nothing wrong with automatics generally speaking. Modern automatics are a pleasure to drive in every sense of the word. They are very fuel efficient, quick to respond to throttle, and are a lifesaver for people who daily drive their car. The problem with the SC300 automatic transmission is that it is only a 4 speed, SUPER lazy, meaning it pretty much never responds the way you need it to and there is always delay present, and thirdly, it's horrible on gas.
Take it from a guy that swapped to a 5 speed... once you do the swap, you will think you are driving a completely different car. First, the gas mileage is noticeably better, the car feels super responsive, and is overall much more involving and more fun to drive. Sound like you found a hell of a deal if you got a complete package for the swap for under $300. That's pretty insane and unheard of. DO IT!

Can someone tell me why Lexus decided NOT on puttin the manual in the SC300 after the vvt-i came into the program? Does the engine create problems with the manual or did Lexus not want the 300 to be competitive to the 400 in performance 97-00? Notice that after the engine upgrades that they didn't really move up the HP in the 300 at all but the 400's numbers kept rising....

Glad this topic came up...
And I'm already trying to put together a decent part list for building a automatic transmission to possible handle roughly around 400hp. I understand the auto tranny can handle about 350ish...but outside of a transmission cooler, what other mods can actually help extend the life and power of the transmission.
Just simply curious.

Someone in here said you'll have less problems with a auto because you won't miss
Shift or downshift at the wrong time.
Solution to that, learn to drive a manual transmission car.
