Default Alternator question..

I have a weak alternator so I removed it, should I go have it rebult or should I jsut to trade it in for a new one? If I have it rebuilt is there anyway I could have it rebuilt with higher amps?

There are two alternators, if memory serves they're 90A and 100A, a new one is very costly from the dealer, a quality reman unit will suit you fine. You're not running anything too crazy in terms of amps, right? And one sub? My system pushes 1579 watts bridged into a 4ohm mono load, but set up correctly and running un-bridged, I can't even dim the lights at idle with the oe alternator. Thing is, if you're looking for more, these are small-case units and don't really have any room to upgrade easily, you'd have to spend some cheese to go with something like the PHR, or you could find someone to trick out a large-case GM unit and make it fit for you, but unless you're an IASCA guy, chances are you're not running anything that warrants that. Hope that's all the info you need.

No Im not running any big systems, heres what I have. ALpine in dash tv,Alpine in dash LCD, 2 tv's in headrest ,6.5s in the front, 6.5s in the rear, 2 12in subs all pushed with a 6 channel PPI amp that is about 600 watts.

So should I take my factory Alt. to get rebuilt or should I go to Autozone or an Autoparts store and get one from them? THanks.

I would do a core replacement with a parts store.

No need for anything fancy unless you are planning on more electronics.

No, what I meant was go to a [U]real rebuilder, find a place for auto electric and get a well-built reman, many of those auto parts store units just get a new set of brushes, any diodes needed, and a coat of paint, there's much more to it. Do it right, which doesn't necessarily mean letting the dealer bend you over, just find a good rebuilder, check the phone book if you need to.

My personal experience, as well as others I know with Toyotas, has been that any autoparts store (pep boys, autozone, kragen, etc) reman. alternator will not charge the battery when idleing. This has been the case in my corolla, relatives supra, celica, and a friends mr2.
