I run premium 91. My dad worked for Lexus and I asked him about this. If it's a big deal. Basically the lower octanes tend to ping and the engine reatrds timing to comPensate. He said there were a few cars brought in barely running due to the timing being so retarded. To fix you have to unplug the computer for 30 mins or disconnect your battery. So it's a roll of the dice. I would stick with premium.

True for pre obd2 cars but obd2 will throw a code if the ks is inop.

I have been running premium, but this car is really only a daily for me. So I might switch to 87 and see if I hear much pinging. I remember older mustangs that I had would ping with lower octanes and I had to either bump the base timing down or run premium. Those cars didn't have knock sensors though.

As much as premium gas costs, it's definitely a status symbol now.

91 octane is the highest they have here in irvine ,ca and is at about $4.30 I have no choice but to run it since i'm 2jzgte.... Then again I hardly put miles on it anyways....... I will say one great thing with the higher the gas prices.. As it goes up the more emptier the freeways get, so I'm good to go for 5 dollars a gallon get these slow broke people off the roads....

usually if the engine doesnt ping you will make more power on lower octane it burns faster....lot of guys on drag racing bike forum run 87 at the track and pick up mph....as the gas burns faster your car will use more of it. Its a small difference between octanes though its more pronounced going from 87 to 110 or 116.

In areas like mine, you may actually be getting newer, better gas using 87, due to the current economic climate, and the fact that most people, regardless of what their car calls for, run 87.... So the 91 sits in the tanks longer / never gets fully depleated before the UST gets replenished. It's more likely there are contaminants in those tanks. Think of this, how many times have you seen a gas station be out of 87, and sometimes even 87 & 89 but they still have 91? I've seen it TONS of times! That being said, ever since I owned my first Premium Required car (89 SHO) in high school, I've run premium in every single vehicle I've owned, including my current Focus and SC400. To my arguement, I change my fuel filter regularly, and its usually pretty dirty, however, my Stepdad gave me his '03 Focus with 201K miles on it, and I changed the fuel filter for the first time at 201K, wasn't all that dirty, he runs only 87...

I don't feel like spending 30 cents extra a gallon is a "status symbol" but maintenance, hell, most people think it's insane to spend roughly $1000 on a timing belt service for a car that costs $4-5K, but no-one on here seems to have a problem with THAT service, or talks about it being a "status symbol".

Maybe so but the 2jzgte is the easiest platform to make gobs and gobs of power... and even the ge is easy to maintain as well that almost anyone with a bit of mechanical know how can easily do a timing belt replacement
