Default Coolant LEAK, I give up :(

I was on the freeway driving home Friday night when I noticed smoke or something coming outta my tailpipe. Temp gauge was hitting HOT so I pulled off on the next off ramp into a hotel parking lot. I checked all my radiator/coolant hoses to see if I blown something. Nothing visible so I poured some water in the radiator and heard water running, sounded like a pretty big leak. It was late and I couldnt find the leak so I called AAA to get a tow home.

(Anyone superstitious? I needed a new front license plate so I surrendered my old plate on Thursday for these, maybe a bad idea?)

Sunday after work I was looking around for the leak. I thought it was coming from the oil cooler lines. There was no signs of a broken line or leaks on the oil cooler. I was stumped and couldnt figure out where the damn leak was.

So I pulled the oil cooler and oil filter housing off cause the leak was around that area. To my surprise, I found the damn leak.

The shortblock was recently rebuilt with new rings, new main bearings and new rod bearings. Never thought of freeze plugs and my machine guy didnt suggest them, IDK why. Now Im paying for it.

I got the shortblock back Thursday 2 weeks ago, had the motor dropped in the following Monday and I was driving it around to break it in. I put roughly 360miles on it till the freeze plug blew.

This was my second attempt doing the 1.5JZ. Had to pull and drop motors 4x's since Feb. This things taking a toll on me. I dont know what to do with this thing anymore.

As much as I love the car, its putting a giant hole in my wallet. I been unemployed and dropping whatever money I have into it trying to get it to run right. Maybe its time to move on?

Thanks. I never replaced a freeze plug before. Any ideas how to pull that out without getting any of it into the block? Whats the process in replacing a new one?

take a punch and a hammer pop it close to a side and use leverage to pull it out. install the new freeze plug with a socket that fits right in and evenly tap it in

If you can get to them, replacing the freeze plugs is very easy, you just need to push one side in and the other side will rotate outward, then grab with channel locks and pull. As the poster above said, then the new one goes in with a socket to drive it.
