Default Torque Converter

Im sorry if this has been asked before, but I've searched and haven't found an answer as to how much a torque converter costs to install, and how long it would take for the installation?

Quotes range from 400-650$
Installation ranges from 4-8 hours (8 hours according to Lexus, 4 hours according the mechanic i take my car to).

Your Lexus dealer will charge you around 500 bucks, which is around 6hrs labour, depending on their labour rate.

theway:

definately do it yourself, your autoshop teacher will know how if he is compident and it may get you some bounus points. I'm putting one on order from precision industries and i'm gonna have my buddy install it with me.

Especially for 500 bucks thats just rediculous. You could almost get a custum mandrel bent exhaust system for that price. DIY

dont you have to drop the tranny?? I thought i read that somewhere on this board. But if so, that seems a bit much for do it yourself.......maybe i am just not mechanicly inclined.

if you're gonna put in a torque converter, why not put in an LSD @ the same time? The extra kick is gonna make it easier to break free out back, and you're gonna have the drive-shaft & exaust out anyways, so why the heck not? I've been told the AT from the JZA80 (MKIV Supra) has a LSD that will fit up reasonably well. If that's not your bag, then for about $750, I can get you the TRD assy made for the Toyota Soarer S/O from japan. You'll have to crack the diff and do some brain surgery, but if your shop teacher's a crazy guy who loves this stuff... You're a lucky man.

Oh yea... Make sure you use Genuine T-IV fluids. I'd give you some, but I get woozy after about a pint

Taking out the transmission is relativly simple, remove exhaust and propshaft, disconnect electrics and cables from autobox, undo box and get ready for a hernia because the box is ******* heavy, a transmission cradle will make it a lot easier.

Powerhouse did my box swap in around 4hrs.

Neal, you really do scare me sometimes, there's a reason it's alot of work, you don't have any real mechanical experience, no offense, but a car that was fifty grand new isn't the best to get your feet wet with. If you can't afford a few hundred bucks for labour, I suggest you wait until you can, nothing wrong with being on a budget, but you're setting yourself up for a headache. There are lots of things you can do yourself on these cars, even if you're a novice, but this is one i'd recommend you have someone do. I'm sure you're friend is very capable, but if something goes wrong it's not like you have legal recourse with him, and if something goes wrong and the converter or trans gets wiped out, how sure are you he'll make good? Odds are he'll tell you he was doing you a favour in the first place. Just trying to watch out for you and other CL members, you give a whole lot of advice here on things you've never done....

luther:

i appreciate your concern, i do worry myself sometimes but my friend rebuilt his own engine, intalled a full suspension on his car, a 5,000 dollar brembo brake kit, new engine cradle, 6 speed tranny, 3 plate clutch, etc. etc. etc.

He also does auto body repair and paint and does a damn good job. So basically i've got all the help i'll need and he is a trustworthy guy because he is my best friend. Anything i don't know he knows so were covered like a blanket.

By the way has anyone heard anything about that Forced Air Technologies supercharger kit were supposed to see before the end of 02? I'm getting a headache trying to decide where my money should go. I'm impatient so its hard.
