Just hands down the SC has a lot more opportunities to have high HP numbers vs the CL-S.

My gf has a CL-S. It always surprises me how well CL-S handles corners despite its FWD configuration. And the V6 engine is quite nice when rpm is brought up to high cam engaging point. But she has no idea I drive the CL-S around in a way it was meant to be. Despite both cars belonging to luxury sports coupe segment, I disagree that CL-S is comparable to SC because of its edgy, sharp design as well as their drive train configuration. (And because CL-S is not sold, nor made in Japan.)

Lincoln Mark VIII (and the previous Mark VII) is very close to the same general idea as the SC. V8, rwd, 4-passenger coupe with good power. They've got aftermarket potential too. They were also the first domestic car to offer HIDs from the factory (rare option in 1995).

I'd rock one today, especially since you can find good examples for $3k or under.

CTS-V you seem to have blown off already but there are not many luxury coupes that compare to it performance wise. I would prefer the CTS-V sedan over the coupe, but still. Seriously bad *** ride.

i would say the closest comparison would be the jag xk's from the 90's were a good match up.

Similar power, both luxurious, both similar weight and body style but the jag as well all know spends most of its time in the garage being repaired.

The sc really is a great luxury sports coupe, thats why i was very confused in the other thread when al;most everyone said it will never be a classic or a collectors car--i strongly dissagree.

ding ding ding! we have a winner! The Legend Coupe was known to rival the SC @ the time and did not disappoint. Style was typical 90's very squarish. Luxury and performance were its 2 main targets.

The type II came with 230hp and available 6-speed !

U get my point

I know you said Japanese, but unlike most on here that think of the SC as an alternative to a Supra TT, I think the SC as more of a Japanese Jag XK. Both are rear drive, V8 coupes, have similar proportions and are more of a luxury GT than a sports car. As Mazda made a better MG with the Miata, perhaps Lexus' original goal was to trump the Europeans with a personal luxury GT that was cheaper yet more reliable.
Bingo.

"If I were, say, an engineer on BMW's just-released $86,540 850i, then the SC400 would cause me to enroll in demolition night courses"

ive always seen the lincoln mark viii as a similar american version of the lexus sc. meaty v8, rwd, big body coupe, luxury, outlandish styling for its time, not exactly the greatest overall performer...
Doesn't handle and drive anything like an SC, but I think Lincoln designers definitely looked at the SC when making the Mark VIII considering the market it was after. Road and Track among others put this car in comparison tests versus the SC400.

I can't lie, I wanted an 850 BAD and was really considering one before I got my SC. They are too expensive though, and fixing them is ridiculous. But they have that almost supercar look IMO.

Has everyone forgotten about the Nissan Skyline or the Acura NSX? Both were never mentioned earlier. I like the design, feel, ride, and power to weight ratio. Just awesome cars when done right.

SC is in a different class of car. The Supra TT is more comparable to the cars you mentioned.

E36/46 3 series are pretty comparable to the 300 imo. Straight 6, about the same size, rwd, sporty yet comfy.

except for the fact that the E36/46 is smaller, sportier, less luxurious than a SC300.

These are big luxury coupes
CL500 and SC400

Since you said E46: im going to compare their motors to the SC300 and by the looks of it; the 330Ci is the only 3-series model that's comprable motor wise
2JZ-GE: 225 hp/ 210 tq (220tq VVTi)
E36/E46
325i:189/184 hp/ 181/175 tq
328i:190/193 hp/ 210/206 tq
330i: 235 hp/ 222 tq(E46 only)
