We're talking about an electric retractable antenna, right? You have to turn the radio on to make the gear unwind it, and have someone standing there to gently pull it out as it unwinds. It's really a 2-person job.
You thread the new one back in the same way, only reverse the process.
When you remove it, make sure to note which direction the teeth on the mast are facing. New one has to go in the same way.

In a simple sense...pulling while the gear is rotating makes little sense. You only need to pull on it once the antenna is at the top. Pulling at any other time will just burn the motor.
Tune your stereo to 107.9 to reach the top...then pull it out of its socket. That will make it make the last turn to release the final gear peg. Then you need to do the opposite to feed the new unit. If there are more than 5-10 teeth missing...you may want to dissemble the motor and clean out the debris.

It isn't.
The antenna goes up to different heaigts depending on the station selected, "tuned" antenna.
When mine failed it failed with the antenna fulled retracted and the nylon "gear-rack" stripped at that position. Motor couldnt extend it. So I had to pull SLOWLY, but with a torque hard enough to turn the motor backward through the reduction gearing.

it also extends fully on the AM band - and 2 different heights on FM - the antenna has its own ecu that gets input from the stereo head unit - I wish Lexus had put the engineering into the rest if the system, frankly - reception isn't that good, oem speakers are crap, but bygolly the antenna does such a dance - -

Oh, yeah. The GS has that, too. Man, I was wondering what the hell was going on. When I change stations the thing is moving all around...such a crazy feature. It's no wonder the motor burns out and the gears wear down.
Does it really help?

Too bad it doesn't actually seem to help the reception any. It's worse than my Integra was, and the Integra was notorious for being crappy.

I actually have to change the mast on my SC this weekend too. Hopefully I wont have a problem. One question though...Ive been reading the posts on the new mast...and one said to make sure the copper end is at the bottom...as thats how the motor knows where the antenna is.
I dont quite get that....so the copper end should be at the end nearest to the teeth....or to the end nearest the actual mast when I install it?
