98 is worth it for the vvti motor. If you can get it for 8,000 I say go for it.

Which is good because it is going to break a lot more than the 1uz which is bulletproof.

I was hoping to spend 8k max for a '97 or '98, but it might be worth spending a little extra for this one. Would love opinions!
9k is a good bit, but 99 is a rare year with only a few SC's made so it is worth the money if it is in FANTASTIC shape, and preferably some history included with it.

Thank you so much for the input everyone! I like knowing there weren't many '99s made. I'm just pondering whether this is a good financial move or not, as wouldn't a '97 with the same mileage be just as good of a car (with the smaller engine of course)? Maybe it's worth spending an extra 1-2k though for newer parts, the less common year model, and the engine.... hmmm......

I like a bulletproof engine ;D I never really got into why it's such a good engine. Is it because of the way it was designed and made?

So I took a look at the car over the weekend, a '99 SC400, about 120,000 miles, in (almost) very good condition, been well-maintained... asking $9950.

It's a gorgeous car and is in very good condition but not pristine. I was amazed at how luxurious the ride was though... absolutely loved it... The paint is in good condition, but there are several cracks in the front on the grill, a few chips, and the worst part is a dent about a foot wide, and I guess about an inch deep - it's actually hard to notice, but in the right lighting it's definitely there. It'd be about $500 to fix, but to do so would mean messing with the original paint job, and that scares me. Also, one of the door pillars has a small section of some fading/bubbling going on which I'd want to have fixed.

The car doesn't have heated seats either, which I would think would be standard for a car like this. That'd be about an extra $300 to have added...

It looks like all the service records are there, looks to have been well-maintained and seems to be in great shape.

I said I was hoping to spend under 8k but offered to go up to $8500 (would have done 9k had the car been in better condition), which might actually be too much for this car, but I don't think the seller will take the offer. It's originally priced at $9950. Should I even pay $8500 for a car that needs body work? The dent isn't awful, but it's pretty noticeable in the right lighting, and I know it would bug me.

Thinking I should keep looking....but at least I know for sure that I love the SC400 and definitely want to find one!! It will be a dream on road trips.... wow.... I can't wait! =D

$500 for a small ding? Talk about rip off! Put a decal over it XD jk. 99' is pretty rare. We live in texas, you don't need seat warmers :P at this point you can either buy it or hope you will find a cleaner one that is probably going to be an older model... which is hard to do too..
