Default Stock 1JZ swap $15,000???

So i was thinking about buying another SC and having a shop do a swap since i dont have the time or space to do it myself... After looking around for a shop that was close that knows what they are doing i decided to call Tweak'd performance (Dr. tweak) since they are close and have experience with toyota swaps.

I called and spoke with someone (i wish i could remember the name NOT Dr. tweak) for a few minutes and explained i havent bought a car yet but wanted to know a BALLPARK figure on what it would run for me to drop off an SC for a STOCK AUTOMATIC 1J swap.... the guy on the phone said it would run about 15 to 18.. So i replied that sounded kinda cheap i was expecting somewhere around $5-6K to which he replied NO 15-18 THOUSAND which would include everything.... so im just speechless and i respond by saying that i was thinking in the $5-6K area and was then told by the guy that he didnt think i could do it for $5-6k even if i did everything myself..... I responded by saying JHOT used to sell complete 1J swaps for $1200 at this point i knew i was either dealing with a complete moron or someone on some really strong drugs so i decided not to waste anymore time and just hung up. Needless to say i wont be sending any business their way.

Am i crazy or does this sound like outright a$$ wrape??? For $18K it better be a singled 2JZ with a V160 and a ******* from Kim kardashian on the way home!!!

A local reputable shop, not Titan can do the swap for 6K. Did I mention that it's a 2JZ-GTE R154 conversion. The swap isn't hard at all and can get knocked out in a weekend. Hell of I weren't opening my own garage, I'd make the drive up and knock it out with you. Find some buddies, rent a storage unit and get her done.

Tweak is crazy to charge that dime for a swap. Hell you couldn't turn around and sell the car for that much. Harness prices I can understand. Some people don't want to deal with it. Let alone feel comfortable doing it at all. But as far as the mechanical goes, you shouldn't pay someone for that. It's more of a buddies and beer thing.

lol wtf, my charged me $1200 to do my 1jz swap. I provided a complete engine set and use a usdm harness. Everything cost me around $2-2.5K total in parts for engine and misc things. Total I spent was about $3.5kishh area.

I can't believe you got that sort of pricing from Tweak... I thought him and his business was totally down to Earth. What the hell happened?

If you HAVE to pay someone to do the swap... pay a local forum member who knows how to do it. It's a 1J swap, you don't need the world's best mechanic to do it. Your typical shade tree mechanic that has done it a few times will have absolutely no problem.

Or, like someone has already suggested, get a couple buddies out to your crib, buy some beer, pizza, and some blow (just kidding ) and finish the swap in about a weekend.

But you're right. Anything in the ballpark of 16k is ridiculous!
