Not sure with where you live, but its very hard to find a good condition MR2, let alone a Turboed MR2..

Default that's any car I think...

give any foolish person a ferrari,...a lotus, or a lamborghini,... i bet they can blow every single one of those cars up if they wanted to,.... thus the same with any lesser car. Hell,....I bet there's a lot of thrashed SC's clunkin' around out there too.

My only recommendation was so he'd have an option of BIG PIMPIN' durin' the week in the Lex.... and car that could be made reliably into an american beast exterminator ( stangs/camaro's/vettes'/etc... ).. at the Houston import show last year,... someone had the MR2 with V8EATR on the plates with power to prove it.

As someone stated,... if you look hard enough, you'll find a flaw with every man made vehicle out there. Maybe walkin' is an option.... how many horsepower does two feet make? How much mileage can you get on a pair of Jordan's?

95 540i,,hmmmmm, I had one. No big deal. Not fast and not easy to mod. And they break alot. You'll be replacing brake rotors every 8 mos. and let me tell you they are expensive. But good luck. I can sympathize with the CA smog crap. Used to live in Newport Beach.

'92 SC300 5-speed + Toyomoto Stage 3 < $20,000

If you want really cheap power, there's no substitute for an American car. $5000 will make at least two dozen domestics into monsters.

I do agree with MadMax that cheap coupes are impossible to find new.
The SC 300/400 back in 92 was 35k new, now the SC 430 is 70k.
The Celica, I could not own.
MR-2 is cool with the VEILSIDE kit only but still a convertible.
Solara coupe i could not own.

3 series is not me, though I could own it.
G35 coupe is the most interesting proposition
CL-S I could not own
350Z also an interesting proposition
Dodge Startus/Chrysler Sebring, no thank you
Monte Carlo looks like horse *****
Mustang is a possibility
Skyline GT-R not sold here (doh)
M3, hell yeah, too much dough

There should be an A4 coupe coming as well as a Passat coupe. Those may be very nice.

So may SUV's no coupes. Looks like I got to buy a used SC 300/400 for a coupe.

Default Don't every go to Weatherford bmw

I had a 94 318i and a 91 850i and got ripped off all the time from that dealership. It was just that I had no choice but go to weatherford bmw cuz it was near my college (berkeley).

Max, don't get the 5 series.

Cheap power would be to just get a Supra or 300zx. 300zx twin turbo w/mod chip makes 450hp...for maybe 11-12K total.
Just get a nice stereo w/that car and be done w/it.

Default true that

The only car I could hands down, no questions asked , go into after havin' an SC400 is the Z. Maybe I'm biased after owning a NA96,... but that's a good lookin' car, reliable, can be made to be faster than a lotta things out there, and handles pretty damn good. Here, I'll even help ya out,... here's a steal right here:

Stage 3 and no racing.... I highly doubt that..

How much does a stage 3 upgrade cost? I just don't think you would do that.

I only of one person and thats is my friends uncle. He actually has a 300zx TT with upgraded turbos! He only drives it once in awhile up and down his driveway but doesn't even run it hard! My friend has asked his uncle if he could drive it and he said no because he didn't want it run hard. lol He also has a few other cars too, he basically has them just to say he has them...

If I only had that problem

(edit)Also if only the toyomoto Stage 3 cost under 2k (/edit)

I test drove a nice 540i, it really had some kick to it. The car chirps into second, and it's nice and comfortable. I was afraid that I would run across this however: the 5 series is simply too massive a vehicle to be compatible with my driving style. My SC400 rides like it's on rails the way it's set up, and the sedan's sheer bulk just won't work out for me. I know I'd end up destroying the 540 by taking a turn too fast or some such thing. I think I'll just stop here for a while on cars, sell my headers and wait on the new Z and G.

I can also tell that my car has more power in the higher RPM ranges.. it's not much, but my car really has a punch to it in higher speed ranges and while I suppose the 540 would get me off the line, I'd eventually outrun it.
