lexus sc: if i should buy it or not

if you service the sc's regularly like change oil every 5000kms, coolant every 2 years, there is no reason why this car should give you any trouble. that is unless the previous owner has fked it up, so make sure you buy one that has been looked after.

Gauge needles, climate control & radio displays are common problems, along with power steering pumps......otherwise extremely dependable & a blast to drive. Never drove my SC's long enough on the highway to figure gas mileage, but in town my 400 got 16mpg & my 300 manual got 19-20...

Salvage title is fine along as it wasn't in a major collision. These cars are so cheap now that they salvaged out quick. If you have 5k in upgrades and you get into a 2000 fender bender they will salvage it. Remember salvage doesn't necessarily mean its junk. mine is salvage, I have bought many salvage and sold many.

But how do you know if its been in a major collision and the owner fixed it up? i was told that weakens the frame? or if its badly wrecked will they just junk it or what?

Don't take offense to this, but based on your posts, an sc isn't the car for you. while the motor and transmission will hold up the parts around it don't. at this point they are all old cars and parts are going to give out. replacements aren't cheap either considering the age of these things and seeing as how you are new to all this, repair bills are gonna kill you.

car fax son...high speed collisions, t-boning and stuff like that will tweak a frame. If it had a rear quarter smash, fender bender, stripped and stolen etc those are fine. as long as it was repaired. drive it...you can tell the diff between junk and not. Like i said these cars salvage easily. anything that isn't reparable is junked or for export only.

I agree with Matrix on this one. I've found from reading and searching the classifieds that you guys out West pay a lot more for certain cars (My Civic sold on Ebay for more than I thought to a CA buyer). Realize that your total cost of ownership might be higher given your region- but as long as you know what you're getting into, you should be ok.
List of things mentioned so far is good: I found a 97 SC300 for 5k, all maintenance done. I'd try and keep in that range, unless you have shop space, lots of time and mechanical inclination.
