I expect his sc300 to give him 375 - 400 miles per tank when he does alignment.
Back to topic, well lets just say the 400 came to me I didnt look for it. Plus m a V8 fanatic (never had anything else in my life from fords to GMC's to chevies to BMW's to lexuses to Cadillacs)

I used to own a turbo 4 cylinder which was tons of fun but only above 5k rpms, found a manual sc300 but turn it down once I drove the sc400. I was not used to the low end torque and immediately loved it that and it sounds awesome. In the 90's gas was cheap and nobody cared about mpg's.

I've had 3 SC400's and 2 IS300's and I don't care for the rubber band effect of the 2jz. I like the low end torque, it feels like the car knows what it's doing and is getting it done instead of running redline to get to speed. Since I don't have to keep my foot to the floor in the SC400 like I did my IS300's I got better mileage in the SC4.

You are gonna have a hard time believing this but I get 28+ mpg on my 03 GS430 which I do 70% highway driving 30% city driving normally, not fast and not slow. An automatic SC300 can't even dream of getting that no matter how slow you drive it. A 5spd SC300 can get that easily (I know mine does).
To stay on topic.
If you don't plan on modifying the engine at all go for the sc400. If your planning to turbo/swap get the sc300.

i kinda wish i would have got a sc300 instead of a sc400 because when i bought the SC i had a turbo and a piggyback already and i couldve went na-t within a few months but oh well. the sc400 is a smooth driving car shifts like butter and thats what i thought i was looking for coming from my 240sx, i was tired of shifting in traffic and tired of having to check on the engine to make sure the thing wasnt gonna blow up. but in the end i found i missed those things and shouldve went the SC300 route and went NA-T. because i missed spinning tires =( it was my favorite activity!
