Default Looking at getting a sc300/400 what to look for?

I've been here awhile and over the years gathered some info on stuff.. but after 4 years in college most of my memory is shot....

Theres 2 SC's I'm going to be looking at this coming week but I want to look for anything that might be a potential issue/ reason for no sale.

First up

SC300, black on tan (i believe its pre 97) automatic

Whats common issues/expensive fixes for this model?

SC400 black on tan (pre 97 aswell) automatic (one owner dealer maintained)

I haven't seen this car in years but he remembered I wanted to buy it back in 05, its in great shape and garage kept (IMO I'd rather have this one) BUT hows the mpgs can i atleast get over 25mpg? I know waterpump failure/leaks/killing alternator are the big issues here. Is that the only thing I should look for?

Sadly these are the only 2 SC's available in my area, parts won't be easy to find either. It will be a daily driver and will see snow/ice and about 25k a year.

Thanks for any heads up on issues to look for while checking the cars out.

A 98+ SC400 can get that no problem.

If you baby an SC, you might be able to reach 25 in the cruise. Don't let anyone try to tell you that the 2JZ-GE in the 300 gets better mileage than the 1UZ in the 400, because it isn't true.

^^^ This guy is right! it maybe a (1) MPG difference between the 300 and the 400, lol which is no big deal IMO.

If you gonna keep it stock with Maybe an exhaust / wheels/ suspensions/ maybe 5 speed down the road get the V8.

If you are thinking about boost which i already know you are! get the 300 and have fun.

Ah did not realize the vvti would swing 25. 92-96 isn't that bad but maybe 23 on the highway on a good day. At least mine. I spend most all my time in the city tho. Either way u go I wouldn't let the mileage stop you. Neither engines are bank-breaking thirsty

It won't even do it in a light weight IS3, much less a boaty SC3. Best I could ever get in any opf my IS3's was 21 mpg downhill with a heavy tail wind.........and a tornado installed (No, not really)

I would only imagine the VVTI engines would get that much MPG, but mine is a 95 2JZ and I only get like 15 MPG. It could be my fault, I think I'm the 4th owner though.

When engines are well maintained, on the highway, both motors can achieve 25 mpg on a long road trip. For combined city an hwy driving your looking at 20-21 mpg realistically driving normally and occasionally pushing it.
