I've had a stack of DSMs, all but one a 1st gen, and none broke where it wasn't my fault. People who get them now don't understand that when they were new, 195 hp was unheard of for a 4 cylinder. That the drivetrain can withstand twice that before real problems arise somehow makes the cars POSes.
Whoda thought that launching off the rev limiter would break an axle?
Somebody buys a used DSM that has who knows what rigged with the wiring and it catches fire and it's somehow the car's fault?
Just how many SCs are found to have a coin wedged into the cigarette lighter again?

I have owned 4 1G's they are god awful cars. I am sure by the second generation alot of things were worked out and OBD2 is a plus.
I have also built a couple 4g63's.
Main thing with DSM's is leaks.... Valve covers, Main seal, oilpan, turbo line gaskets, Throttle body, intake manifold, injector o-rings. Seems like nothing ever sealed good on a 1g DSM unless it was rebuilt.
Every turbo DSM i had had MAJOR boost leaks, which eventually did a number on the turbos on them. At least some minor shaft journal bearing wear.
Lets start off with 1G DSM basics.
Leaky CPU capacitors, I have replaced in my cars around 5 computers. They just randomly go out and car won't start.
Valve covers, they always leak.
Throttle body gaskets
Turbo oil line gaskets.
Main seals.
Turbos- Thanks to all the boost leaks.
Transmissions 5-spds FWD usually always grind 2nd.
Now for internal engine, Balance shafts, this engine Has 2 timing belts and 2 balance shafts, I have scene on roughly all Stock engine failures either the B timing belt broke and shredded and ruined the A timing belt. Or the balance shaft bearings feel out, got to worn and the engine lost oil pressure and spun bearings.
6-Bolts always spin CYL 3 for some reason.
7-Bolts have problems with center bearing wear and crankshaft endplay. A.K.A crank walk.
Everything is TDY, and most of the bolt holes require a oddball thread size and pitch such as 11x 1.25. While 6 bolts use 12. 1.25 which is alot more common.
I can go on and on, but getting ready to eat and tired.

Just picked mine up man and i'm having a blast with it. I've been going through and checking maintenance off the list, but you're not going to hurt it any. I don't do burnouts etc (ok i did one LOL), but never be scared to hit the gas. Maintain it and fix it when it breaks. Other than that, just enjoy it.

Drive it like you stole it! I have four Lexus' and one GS with >220K, and it still is powerful, strong and quiet. My favorite is my 93 SC400. It has only 80K miles and is beautiful, quiet, tight and STRONG. A major head turner this car is.

hahahahaha i own pre-dsm twins lol.....sadly they are head ache's lol I will say this I bought my sc4 for 700 bucks I check my oil I keep an eye on everything...(dsmn gun shy i guess) but I push mine into 4k leaving the house 7k getting onto the highway and wot on long straight aways when i know there's a couple of ricers around who will get profiled first lol

Man if I paid $700 for my SC I would do the same thing. Sadly I paid $3860 for mine.
But only cause it HAD everything that I wanted to put on it anyways.

i dont do it cause i spent 700 bucks on the car Id drive a $9k one the same way look its as simple as these guys are saying with a lexus if you take care of it it will take care of you and will let you PLAY when you want to dont hold back due to dsm fear this is a 20x's better car and engine then any dsm could have

Haha Alright,. O btw what is the interior fuse box location? to the left or to the right of the pedals? and what all do I have to take off to get access to?

lol... about the DSM's I had a 95 2g with a eprom ecu! 7 bolt motor broke on a 16g. Bought a 1g block, did a build up with 4g64 crank and stroked it to 2.3l. Ported 2g head with custom intake mani and a SBR turbo. The think put out 405 fwhp all day long reliably.
moral of the story, you can buy a car, not maintain it or cut corners and it will eventually brake on you getting a bad rep. Or you can get a car, maintain it and not buy crap parts, beat on it and it magically doesn't break. If your gonna build an SC use good parts. It hurts your wallet but it will love you in the end for it. Or if your gonna make parts make sure you know what your doing!

OP - at least you don't own a car with a 7M. Although the 7M motors are a strong engine once you fix their inherent issues (insufficient head-bolt torque being the big one), they still create paranoia within the owner. Even after a top-end rebuild with correct head bolt torque and new gaskets, I am CONSTANTLY watching my oil pressure and temperature gauges, especially when I rev my engine past 5000 RPM. The 7M, both GE and GTE, have oil systems that SUCK, which means that they can develop rod knock very easily if you aren't constantly on top of your oil level. And, even when you fix the head-gasket issue, you will still watch your temp gauge, coolant level, and oil dipstick religiously.
