How hard can I drive this car?

DSM is Diamond Star Motors, aka the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon, and Plymouth Laser, from 1990 thorough 1999. Also grouped with them are the 1991-1992 Galant VR4 and the 1989 Mirage turbo.

get on that *****
I purchased my SC400 92' with 200k + in july. In those eight months I have given this engine a 'one over', and concluded it is not leaking any fluids, and had no breathing or fuel issues. Since then I have put new rubber, filters, and fuel pump in. As well as a few OEM original parts to replace cheap ***** the last owner had thrown on.
Speaking from experience, this car is built to take serious abuse like a fish in water. It even has an ECT button to switch from 'normal' operation' to 'power' mode. In power mode your car will be more apt to downshift, and will allow you to redline before the auto trans shifts if your laying into your accelerator, consider it an 'overtake' or 'sport' mode. Its there for a reason, and you will know when to use it once you've gotten some experience under your belt. Hearing you baby this car makes sense, it is gorgeous. But rest assured, there is no need for such nonsense.
Once i was certain my engine/tranny had no issues i gained courage. And now i RARELY manage a trip out of my driveway without hitting at least 5500 rpm. Your power curve hits over 200 lbs of torque right around 1700 rpm, and peaks at 250lbs of torque at close to 5800. So regardless of you babying this engine you are actually using 80% of your power below 2000 rpm's. That being said, the power is smooth and silky all the way up to wide open throttle. And even with a FAT set of tires on it you can bring the rear end around practically anytime you want.
So in conclusion, eight months after buying my SC I drive her harder than ever and she loves it. One note: I am the only person I know that sits in his driveway for 5 minutes before leaving everyday, and the only one of my friends who refuses to drive my car enthusiastically unless my temperature gauge shows that I have reached normal operating temperatures. I am confident this is part of the reason my car still operates as well as it does.

I just purchased a 92 sc300 automatic with a 1jzgte swap. Right now the car only has one mode : POWER MODE The engine shifts between 3000 and 3500 rpms EVERYTIME with no problems. Definitely sucking more gas when on power mode, but thats the price you pay for high performance. I have to wait one more week before the mechanic does the wiring job so I can have normal mode as well. This engine can take a beating.

Well guys, I have my first confirmed KILL in Economy mode lol.
Long hilarious story and I embarrased this guy and his gf... but anyways.
1992 Eagle Talon 2.0L 5 spd.
MY sc hauls butthole. After that I drove it under 1500 lol and still am.
After I whooped him, hes like do a burn out!!!.
To which I replied... No. Then I casually drove off all slow vrommm rumble rumble.
O I also let my car run for couple minutes and don't kinda go faster unless its temp gauge is up hahaha.

Those have 135 horsepower. Had it been the turbo variety he'd be the one laughing.
I owned a new one (Eclipse GS 2.0 5spd) in 1992 and got beat down by a Town Car. At that point I didn't mess around anymore until I traded it for a GSX. Then things got interesting, and my wallet got lighter, for the next 15 years.

Yea I know, a turbo DSM would probaly have made things much worse.
But see he made the mistake of saying is Talon could beat my lexus in front of his gf.. SO I was like yehhh idk about that man..
I put the engine and trans in that car myself before I sold it to him. I know what its got.

I drove mine like I stole it, it sucks working at 7am with an **** boss who actually fired someone for being late too many times.
Bought her at 119k, sold it at 173k. I used M1 every 5000 miles and of the 4 years of ownership, broke down only once. I cracked the distributor cap at 170k, but I was still able to drive 20 miles back home to my mechanic. It's a solid car!
