Default Taxes... yuck...

Okay, so here in the Peach State, some of us have to get our cars smogged (emissions) and then pay a tax. So that got me thinking, since my total bill was $65 in taxes and $14 for emissions coming to a grand total of $79.

What do folks pay in other states? I mean, it seemed all right for a 15 year old car- but then when you look at the millage rate (how they value the car) it gives you an idea of how well these cars keep their values.

Emissions technician did say that he sees fewer of our cars every year, and very few '97s out of that small number.

You other GA residents, what damage has the government assessed you?

I've always been surprised that GA even has emissions, coming from Florida myself. Now that I'm in CA, an older car like this cost me around $40 or $50 to smog. There is no additional tax that I am aware of other than whatever is worked into the fees you pay at the time of testing. I can't remember the final cost exactly without going into my records but it's around that number. Maybe I'm off by a bit. I'll correct my figures later when I can get to my records.

Regardless, you're paying less (I'm assuming the tax isn't much) and you probably also don't have the idiotic and racket-preserving visual inspection that we have here.

In MS, we don't have emissions.....thank the good Lord.

Taxes on MS cars SUCK when they're new. The plate for my 2 year old Trailblazer SS were just over $700. The plate for my 07 335i (five years old now) were still just over $300.

After 10 years they are considered fully depreciated, and they're $25-50/year.

The above is one of the main reason that I don't buy new vehicles. I'd love to have a 2012 or 13 Mustang GT...but I can't see paying $1,000 year just for the license plate.

My registration fee for a 1998 SC300 was $112 this year and another $45 for emissions testing in Southern California. .

In CA, for cars that are 5 years or new there is not smog testing required. However, there is a 'smog abatement fee' for $45 (or somewhere around there). So they collect the smog fee from even the ones that don't have to smog check.

I stand corrected, fellas. It looks like I got off pretty easily there.

I used to live in a part of GA where all you had to pay was the taxes, no emissions. Which was pretty good for a lot of the residents, since they had no way of coming close to passing.
