My friend who is a Registered Importer said the average conversion costs him about $7,000, although the car's he Imports are usually $150k+... need to make the front/ rear bumpers meet U.S. safety standards, the car needs to pass U.S. emissions, etc... to street-legalize the car in the U.S.

Good luck. If yoo havent payed for it yet...hold on to your money.
Customs wont let yoo take it off the boat here in the U.S.

Been down that road with a Skyline already. There are 'ways' but a Soarer isnt worth it IMO.

emerald: yeah... for that hassle and money I can do better things. I haven't paid for it yet thank goodness... I got a call back from DOT and I have to go through 3 goverment agencies and put up 250% of the value of the car + conversion + shipping + taxes + dock fees and I won't even be able to get the car or the money back for over 8 months even if I ordered it now. that puts me up in the 20-25 grand stuck for 8 months... not worth it.

yeah, A lot of people see the prices and want to jump on a deal but it adds up sooo much

I didnt want to see anyone make a mi$take like I did last summer.
I had an sc300(purchased here),sold it to purchase a Skyline over-seas. Ended up having the car shipped here and back to Japan to be resold. Ended up losing a bit over 2k over the whole deal.

There was a loophole at the DOT that was closed a week prior to me sending my deposit over there

I was also seriously looking into but after seeing all the rules and regulations and not "knowing" anyone in the import business I just didn't want to take the risk of losing a lot of money in the long run. Also I remember reading that somewhere sometimes you have to import 2 because they have to use one for crash test purposes?

Can anyone else confirm that?

projectsc: to comply a car it needs to be crash tested front, rear, sides and roll-over...requires more than two cars.

theres soooo much more 'stuff' that has to be done besides bumpers (thats the easy part) which is why Motorex charges so much......they've put out a SERIOUS amount of cash to get those cars approved by the DOT.

Yeah you have to be a Registered/ Independent Importer just to bring the car in to the U.S. VSsc400, if you want my friend's phone # PM me, then you can call him, he will go over the whole process with you, break down to you how much everything cost's and then you decide from there whether it is a good deal or not for you.

JAC:
I don't think I am going to go through with it. But thank you for the information.

i found on a list of cars from overseas that have already passed the crash test. Soarer falls in the "dramatically simlar to existing vehicle" I was surprised to see RHD skyline GT-S and GT-R" so somone has already crash tested RHD skylines for US import.
