93 sc 400: good deal?
Hey guys,
I have been toying with the idea of getting an everyday driver to save on my current daily. I saw this on a local craigslist and from what I know it seems to be a great deal. I have read fuel economy should average around 20 on the 400. Is this true? Is the mileage to high? I have seen them go very high, but at 180+ you gotta wonder every day if it's gonna run. Any idea what to expect for insurance price if I stick with just basic insurance? I am 23 and have a fairly clean record.

Sorry for the deleting of the Craigslist link, but the rules clearly state no outside links. Could have viruses and so on. Just save the pictures and upload through Photobucket or something similar, and copy and paste all the info from the site in your posting.
Good luck on your decision you make on the SC!!!

you definitely will not be averaging 20mpg, ill tell you that much. in the winter with my sc400 with light mods i average closer to 12mpg. mileage is nothing as long as the car looks like the previous owner did routine maintenance

I've seen ~ 22 mpg highway, around 16 in town in a 190k mile car with zero maintenance. They're dirt cheap to insure due to their age.
The SC's lack of mpg is mostly due to its gearing. 20 years ago they didn't see a problem with 3k rpm at interstate speeds whereas today all cars have an eco top gear. My Lincoln Continental gets 24+ mpg and that's on 13-yo oxygen sensors.

Roughly up to $2000 is a good price, depends on condition etc etc etc.
As for insurance, I have a '95 SC300 insured with Geico, 25, 2 points for no turn signal virtually two years ago exactly, $80/month liability. I'm in Md, though, but should give you somewhat of an idea. I've been thinking of going full, all the work that's on it...
