Took my car to the shop, should I keep it or sell it?
Hey CL, Yesterday I took my 92' Sc400 into the local Toyota dealership to get the codes ran since jumping the ports never worked (I now understand why). I sat in the showroom for 3 hours and they finally came and showed me the problem, They couldnt read the codes because their was no power to the ob1 port. They tried to do it manually and nothing. They suspected that their was either a short somewhere or my ECU was bad. To diagnose it would start at $250, not even counting fixing it. What should I do? Should I take a shot in the dark and buy a used ECU and hope that fixes it? I took it in since my car isn't idling and they said the ECU can cause this as well. What does the problem sound like to you guys? They also said I should try and replace the TPS. I love my SC but at times I hate it!

It's the ECU. Replace the capacitors and it will likely perk up. The ECU service may solve all your issues. As far as I know the LLS site is offering the service, but there are no way to guarantee it will fix your specific issue.

Most likely an ecu issue if you jumper the ports and nothing happens.
Its right in the manual if the check engine light is non-responsive, you check the wiring up to it(never really goes bad), and if that doesn't check out you end up at the end of the flowchart which says replace ecu.
you can also look into getting a temp replacement ecu if you use the car alot, and then you can send your old one out for repair, lots do this so there is no downtime. you could just use the replacement but sooner or later it could have the same problem so its a risk.
As OLT said its the caps, many have done it themselves, but you need to know your way around a soldering gun or be a quick learner with a lot of patience.
*edit* see link a few posts down.

There you go, do that and you can get power back to your port!

Yeah, if it is your ECU i would look into swapping one out with a good used one or get one from a auto yard on the cheap that way you know for sure its your ECU, thats just me tho.

I decided Im going to send it in and have it fixed, My car is having alot of small, but easy problems (Like my door handle broke) So I am going to park it for about a week or so and try to fix everything I can so I can have a reliable car. I would love to borrow an ecu but their is only 2 other Sc's in my town and only one runs. I am planning on taking out the ECU today and getting it sent in, Im just hoping that this rebuild ECU fixes things
