light colored smudge on rear view mirror. What to do?
The rear view mirror on my 93 SC400 has had this smudge mark on it since I bought it. It is about the size of a quarter, and is more silver and transparent than the rest of the mirror. I've tried cleaning the mirror, but it seems like an internal problem.
Any ideas on what may have caused this? I figure I'll just have to buy another mirror, but do any of you have ideas on how to fix it before I do that?

i have the same thing but its not as large...our mirrors are about 750.00....if you find some thing better let me know...its cause the auto dimmer is a standard feature, that why the cost is so high...usually i just keep it on the dim part and you cant tell that much that it has faded...the problem with the spot is that part of the dimming layers have started to wear off. my spot is on the left side of the mirror almost in the middle..but its about the size of a pinky fingerprint...

I have that same exact problem, mine is on the top right of the mirror. I'm pretty sure there is no way to fix it, but I presume its the same as a plasma computer moniter. Someone must have hit that spot too hard, I guess. It doesn't bother me that much though, and I have better stuff to spend my 750 on!

Yeah, don't bother fixing it- just go right out and buy a new one.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot- you CAN go to a junkyard and buy one there. And install it yourself. I think I read that somewhere.

You are right, MW- my 92 has a switch that must be pressed to dim its reflections at night.
So that new replacement mirror might cost much less than $750! Good news, huh Bentley?

There is another thread about this from not to long ago. A couple people, myself included, were trying to retrofit the 96+ autodim mirrors onto an older model. On the auto dim mirrors, there are two extra wires besides red and black that the older cars don't have. If anyone can post a diagram of an autodim mirror setup, I can finally figure out what the other wires are for and where they go. As it is, with just red and black connected and a 96+ mirror on my 93, it does auto-dim (don't know what it would do differently with the other two wires connected though).

One of the extra wires is likely a reverse interupt wire. That is, when the reverse lights are on, the dimming of the mirror turns off, so that parking lot lights don't darken the mirror and make backing up harder.
