Default Oil filter

A few months ago, I received a coupon for oil filters at a local Toyota dealership. I went to a Toyota parts department and ordered the oil filter recommended at Keith's Planet Soarer webpage (part number 90915-20001). I ordered it because I saw a coupon with the oil filter on the coupon and it was on sale for $4 each.

The guy said that the filter in the ad is not on sale. This was a bummer because they had the exact filter in the ad. Isn't this false advertisement?

At any rate, I recently received another coupon for an oil filter with the same oil filter on the coupon and called again to confirm that the oil filter is for sale. The guy said that Toyota renumbered the filter and its new part number is 08922-02011. Can somebody confirm this?

The filter you want is 90915-20004, Toyota Denso made in Japan. It has a thicker, higher quality filter element than the 08922-02011. The 08922-02011 is a cheap *** filter made in the USA. It's shorter, has a thinner, flimsier filter element, inferior constuction, and filters less oil than the 20004. Steve Ganz at Carson Toyota sells the 20004 for $6.99/ea by the case. Lexus charges $13.25. Toyota makes another filter for their V8s: 90915-YZZB5, that is supposed to compete with other low-end filters. The YZZB5/B9 is also smaller and does not have an oil bypass valve. Ganz sells them all, but he only uses the 20004 on his SC300 and Supra.

I read the articles and asked the guy if they were the exact same. The guy assured me that the two were. Weird or just stupid....?

Go to the parts dept, ask for that filter and bring the coupon. If they refuse, ask for the manager, raise hell and make a scene. They should give you the discount reguardless. If not, write a letter to the corporate office threatening false advertisement.

As keith13b suggested, I think it would work, but too stressful for both you and the dealer don't you think?

I am sure if you insisted, they would sell you some @ substantial discount but probably not $3.99 each.

Just buy the good filter for an $3. Sheesh, spread that over a three month interval that's only $1 extra per month to make sure the most crucial fluid that flows in your car is always contaminate-free. 90915-20004!

Hey Lex400sc Where can you get the 20004 filter for 3$? Even at Carson, it's 7$ and you have to buy the whole case, then pay for shipping.

Personally I love to get louder at the dealer right where people are getting their car fixed or getting ready to buy a whole new car. Start saying loudly that this dealer just scams people and lies about service/parts. When they ask you to quite down, say no, then start announcing to everyone in the waiting area how they are screwing you. I had to do that at the Mazda Dealer and a Ford dealer before, and it worked liked a charm. I got what I wanted and more. Besides whats the worst that could happen, they don't sell you the filter for 4$ ? - and what happens if you stay quiet- they don't sell you the filter for 4$. So you got nothing to lose. Besides, its soooo much fun.

Just my .02 errr .05 cents.

Later-
Keith
