I love my SC400. It's a 1993 with only 129,000 miles on it.
I have always wondered.. (Aside from a handy cigarette pack holder) what exactly is that hollowed out 5 inch verticle "void" on the center console by the radio and climate control.
Silly question. but I would love to know if it was just a design for smokers, or men who wanted to wedge their wallet in this gap.. haha..
Another Trivia question.
Just last week I noticed on my SC... a round plastic "object" behind my gas pedal. It sparked my curiosity. Being new to this forum and knowing that there are many lexus / sc owners & lovers. I'm here to get answers.. haha..
Thanks in advance

hahaha... That thing is brilliant! The way people drive around here, My drink would go flying & short out the radio & climate control.. I'd be cold (or) hot & have to sing to myself!
Thanks for the picture k7q.
So now on to the next trivial question?
Black circular object directly behind the gas pedal?

92-93 did not receive the butterfly cupholder unfortunately. They decided that spot would be a good use for the cassette case to be housed while a cassette is being played. I'm sure it could be modified to house the butterfly cupholder. I've got one on my desk waiting for me to fool around with it.

The backing inside the hole is removable; then the cup holder plugs right into place; it has little clips on it.
Heres a vid of the cup holder in action though.

I just installed the cup holder in the little cubby in my 92 SC400.
Had little luck getting the back plate out of the cubbyhole, so I just sanded off the tabs (one was broken off anyway) and installed the holder right to the back of the cubbyhole with 2 black #6 pan head sheet metal screws. Drill 2 holes in the holder back where you can get at them with the holder open, then place in the cubbyhole and drill pilot holes thru the plastic backing. You have to sand off the little square brackets on the back of the holder so it doesn't stick out too far when you cut off the tabs.
Very sturdy mounting and removal is a matter of unscrewing the 2 screws. My wife loves it, but it's not for a jumbo drink cup.

You don't have to modify it; just buy a cup holder, and it'll clip in.

earlier Toyota/Lexus automatic models through 93 have a kick down switch at the base of the accelerator pedal, so when you push down far enough to hit it if the auto ecu hasn't already decided to shift down from the gear you were cruising in, it will instantly kick down to the next available gear if it is at the right rpm to do that, meaning it wont kick down to 3rd or 2nd if it will be past the rev limit, but if it can drop down it will drop down and run it to redline and continue like that.
on newer models, the functionality is just built into the ecu, at a certain throttle position and speed it will kick down if you push the pedal to the floor, and they got rid of the redundant switch.
I think someone once told me it was like a supercharger switch I cracked up so hard but I guess it does make you go a bit faster!!

40 Pin Plug 3 KD Kick Down Switch Input This pin is used to detect when the accelerator pedal is fully depressed. Used to 'kick down' or change down a gear of automatic transmission under full throttle. This pin is Grounded by a switch that is located under the accelerator pedal that is pressed at full throttle. The Kick Down switch is open circuit when the switch is not pressed (Accelerator pedal is not fully depressed). Note: 1991-10 to 1993-08 models only, later models do not have this pin wired or a Kick Down switch installed.
