i had a similar situation - moved from tucson to nebraska. the sc (5-spd, no lsd) with all seasons didn't fair very well at all in the snow (though was completely fine in the rain). decided to not risk the sc and stored it in a garage for the winter.
picked up a '95 explorer xlt 4wd for $1000. so far i have $200 total in maintenance (plugs/wires/a couple sensors/coolant change etc). the controltrac 4wd system is absolutely amazing in the snow. if i try to make it lose traction in the snow, the fronts kick in and it just stays solid. snow tires would be overkill (though i could only imagine it *with* snows).
so just a thought. extremely reliable, the parts are ridiculously cheap and can be found everywhere, and the pick and pulls are full of them. it's also cool to drive over things.
