If you connect a 9V battery's pos and neg ends to the speaker terminals, you'll get that scratchy popping noise. I may be confused on what you're describing, but why are you expecting that touching new speaker terminals to old ones would result in more than that? Are you trying to transfer the signal from old to new with the stereo playing while testing?

Previous commenter advised. Now the challenge will be finding a 9v battery

They could either run new wire from the stereo to the speakers, which is pretty easy to do but less clean (i.e. more wires present), or tap into the stock wires at the stereo and bypass the stock amp, connecting straight to the speakers. Price would be pretty similar either way.

I have a very similar issue, after a long carwash or heavy rain. All my speakers will go out except the Sub, eventually it seems to come back to normal after a day of not using them LOL.
