I picked up a black '97+ dash this week and in doing a bit of searching on compatibility, was reminded of this old thread. I'll probably swap the dash in at some point -- it's the best looking aspect of two-tone, black and tan conversions, IMO -- but the wood trim was badly damaged by whoever tried before me to remove it, so I'll need to get a replacement first.
In taking the trim apart and comparing it to a '93-96 spare, here's what I found...
Center vents. Top: '97-00. Bottom: '93-96. Note the different attachment points for vent to wood trim and wood trim to dash.
Passenger vents. Top: '97-00. Bottom: '93-96. No differences that I could see. The wood is broken clean through at the edge of the vent.
It never occurred to me that there are center vent differences by year, so that's something to be aware of when shopping for un-cracked replacements.
One nice thing about the '97+ dash is it's easier to delete the passenger airbag, since the cover clips into the dash at four points in addition to being loosely secured to the airbag. Earlier years had the cover mounted entirely to the airbag, making it somewhat cumbersome to strip away and rig up a mounting to the dash supports.
