Transmission Question
A little while ago, I sent out a thread asking about a whining noise and another one asking about a vibration in the pedal when steppping on the gas. Here is what happend since.....
Last Wed. I put the car in the shop to have the whining noise investigated. They indicated that it was the powersteering pump. It was replaced, but when I picked the car up. It was still whining. The shop thought that it was air in the line and that it should go away. (This shop has done all of the work on the car since I have had it has always been very fair.)
After leaving the shop, I drove for about 10 miles and the car started to slow down. I hit the gas and the revs went up, but the car continued to decellerate. I was able to get back to the shop driving at 20MPH. The shop indicated that the whine must have been a transmission pump and told me that It would cost about $3000.00 to rebuild it.
THe car is a 1992 sc400 has 147,000 miles, the usual flickering needles on the dash but otherwise drives very well. I get the oil changed regularly as well as all other fluids.
I am looking for advise on the repair, replacement of the trans or any other suggestions.
It would not be an issue, had a not pruchased a new house 2 weeks ago.
Thanks for any suggestions.

I would say that is a terrible price. First, I would demand a refund on the power steering job, as it was obviously not needed. Next, take the car to a specialist transmission shop and see how much for them to fix it or rebuild it.
I would sell you my entire auto, but I havent pulled it out yet

Nate,
Is the car driveable at all right now? Pull the tranny dipstick and smell the fluid... does it smell burnt? is it a nice red color or dark? Change the fluid, better yet flush the fluid. If it still looks like a bad tranny after the flush do NOT I repeat do NOT take it to any of the local NoVa Aamco dealers ( I assume you're in Washington DC ). I would reccomend National Transmissions in Bailey's Crossroads. I am not affiliated nor have I personally ever had them rebuild any tranny but...... They do rebuilds for the area dealers Bill Page Toyota/Honda, Jack Taylor Toyota, Pohanka Lexus/Acura so I'm not sure if they will work on retail of only do wholesale work. If it's wholesale only, find a local place that will have your tranny rebuilt by National or I can refer you to some Jack Taylor Toyota techs that will work on your car as a "side-job"
I'm pretty busy until the 14th but feel free to call me 703 623 9404 if you're in the Falls Church area and I'll be happy to take a look at your car.
Regards
