How do I fix horrible AM reception?
I have a 95 sc4 with the Nakamichi system. My FM reception is pretty good, but my AM reception is absolutely horrible. I can only pick up a few local stations and nothing outside of 20 miles away. There are some huge radio stations 40 miles away that I wouldn't know exist if I based the evidence on this radio -- not a bit of reception from any of them is heard. Is it my antenna or??? I have doubted that it is my antenna since my FM reception is good. Bad or loose wiring? Suggestions anyone? Thanks.

welcome to CL, risc4.
I had a similar problem before, but my problem was just bad rear speakers.
also check out this link, might help your problem. (service bulletin which Whitmanpc1 posted before).

I had this same problem in my '95 SC400 and the way I fixed it was to go to Radio Shack and buy a new antenna cable, I think it was 12 feet long. I then disconnected the original from the radio and just left it in place. You only want to disconnect the main cable and leave the other wire that operates the antenna motor connected.
Thread the new cable under the console and under the rear carpet on top of the drive shaft tunnel and then under the rear seat. You can then make a tiny hole through one of the rubber grommets into the trunk and then disconnect the original cable from the antenna and hook up the new one.
You will be amazed because now your radio will actually work like it should. It shouldn't cost you more than $10 or so for the cable and an hour or two of your time. You should be able to get to the front cable connection by removing the shift handle and center console cover. As I remember I didn't even have to remove the radio but even if you do it isn't that hard.
You also have to remove the rear seat cushion which is just a matter of lifting up the front of the cushion to disengage the front clips and then pulling it forward. The rear seat backrest is held in place by 2 bolts on the bottom which you remove and the slide the backrest up to disengage the claps at the top.
