inline 6 vs. V8 reliability

When several Lexus mechanics (including ones that have been with Lexus for over a decade) says they've never seen a 1UZ-FE fail, that means something!
(of course, that's not including ones that were in accidents and other such mishaps)

Although the V8 is damm near bullet proof, don't kid yourself. Like every other car I have owned, all the "periferal" stuff will fail in time.
I have the reciepts to prove that the; power steering pump, alternater, water pump failed.... all in what I would consder either normal or before it's time. That power steering leak is a big problem that when I asked Lexus about, gave me the "huh, we never see that". Just like any other dealer, they will say anything, but those of us who have had the failure, and there are plenty of us, know that line is pure BS.
I only use the dealers for alighnments now, as everything else, I do myself.
Too bad no one has figured out how to make all the accessory items as bullet proof as the Lexus V8.

Oh come on, they are both bulletproof motors! An inline-6 is naturally going to be more reliable than a v-8 (ceterus paribus); However, the 1UZ-FE is overbuilt, like ALL Toyota drivetrains. I have heard from mechanics about the notoriety of the 1UZ-FE motor as well. They just don't break. If you design a motor and tranny capable of handling 500hp and only demand 250hp from it, it will take a lot of effort to break it. I'm on 77,300 miles and except for fluids and filters, I have yet to replace a single item under the hood (knock knock!). Electrical circuits are bound to fail, especially when your car is laced with ten miles of wiring, a hundred control circuits and sensors, and ten thousand solder points. Rubber dries, plastic ossifies, copper oxidizes, iron rusts, these are all normal things that happen to materials. The key is finding a car that comes in good condition (west coast cars). I wouldn't concern myself with which drivetrain is more reliable, it's too close to determine without hard numbers IMO.

SDSC300:
I think I'm having problems with my synchros, also. When the tranny is cold, second gear is hard to engage, and when I'm trying to shift fast, I'll grind it sometimes. That has caused some embarrasing stop light jousting with lesser vehicles. What were the symptoms of your synchros going bad? Do other people call them "dogs" or is that just a Cajun thing?
Thanks,
Wiley
